Welcome to Wednesday Morning prayer from the Anglican ‘A prayer book for Australia’.
We share the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ:
GOD in his infinite mercy, forgives all sins, and through our baptism in the name of our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, we are given a rebirth into new life, free from the burden of all sin. ALLELUIA
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessed be God forever.
Let us Pray.
1
Rejoice always pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks;
For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus.
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of God’s Grace
Blessed are you the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ:
For you have blessed us in Christ Jesus
with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
You chose us to be yours before the foundation of the world:
That we should be holy and blameless before you.
In love you destined us to be your children, through Jesus Christ:
according to the purpose of your will,
to the praise of your glorious grace:
which you freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.
Ephesians 1.3-6
3 The Opening Prayer
The night has now passed and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence may be kept.
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever.
Amen.
4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 69. 1-6.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
We consecrate this day to your service, O Lord; may all our thoughts, words, and actions be well-pleasing to you and serve the good of our brothers and sisters; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.
The 1st Reading is from 2 Kings beginning at chapter 23. Verse 31
Jehoa-haz was twenty-three years old when he began to reign;
he reigned three months in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Ham-utal daughter of Jere-miah of Libnah.
He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, just as his ancestors had done.
Pharaoh Neco confined him at Riblah in the land of Hamath, so that he might not reign in Jerusalem, and imposed tribute on the land of one hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.
Pharaoh Neco made Eli-akim son of Josiah, king in place of his father Josiah, and changed his name to Jehoi-akim. But he took Jehoa-haz away; he came to Egypt, and died there.
Jehoi-akim gave the silver and the gold to Pharaoh, but he taxed the land, in order to meet Pharaoh's demand for money. He exacted the silver and the gold from the people of the land, from all according to their assessment, to give it to Pharaoh Neco.
Jehoi-akim was twenty-five years old when he began to reign; he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Zeb-idah daughter of Ped-aiah of Rumah. He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, just as all his ancestors had done.
In his days King Nebu-kad-nezzar of Babalon came up;
Jehoi-akim became his servant for three years; then he turned and rebelled against him.
The Lord sent against him bands of the Chaldeans, bands of the Arameans, bands of the Moabites, and bands of the Ammon-ites; he sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by his servants the prophets.
Surely this came upon Judah at the command of the Lord, to remove them out of his sight, for the sins of Manasseh, for all that he had committed, and also for the innocent blood that he had shed; for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the Lord was not willing to pardon.
Now the rest of the deeds of Jehoi-akim, and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Annals of the Kings of Judah? So Jehoi-akim slept with his ancestors; then his son Jehoi-achin succeeded him. The king of Egypt did not come again out of his land, for the king of Babylon had taken over all that belonged to the king of Egypt from the Wadi of Egypt to the River u-fraitees.
Jehoi-achin was eighteen years old when he began to reign; he reigned three months in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Nei-hushta daughter of El-nathan of Jerusalem.
He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, just as his father had done.
2nd Reading is from the gospel according to - Mark 2. 1-17.
When Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. 2So many gathered around, that there was no longer room for them, not even in front of the door; and he was speaking the word to them. 3Then some people came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. 4And when they could not bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and after having dug through it, they let down the mat on which the paralytic lay.
5When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, 7“Why does this fellow speak in this way? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8At once Jesus perceived in his spirit that they were discussing these questions among themselves; and he said to them, “Why do you raise such questions in your hearts? 9Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and take your mat and walk’? 10But so that you may know, that the Son of Man, has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— 11“I say to you, stand up, take your mat and go to your home.” 12And he stood up, and immediately took the mat and went out before all of them; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”
13Jesus went out again beside the sea; the whole crowd gathered around him, and he taught them. 14As he was walking along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him.
15And as he sat at dinner in Levi's house, many tax collectors and sinners were also sitting with Jesus and his disciples—for there were many who followed him. 16When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, they said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 17When Jesus heard this, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.”
A 2-minute Gospel reflection:
In this Gospel, Jesus speaks with authority telling a man his sins are forgiven and to get up and walk. He uses the words ‘son, your sins are forgiven’ relaying to the paralytic the information that Jesus is one with authority overall, a father figure to man. Further Jesus commands the man; Get up and walk. The man obeys this authority and command, despite previously showing himself as being a paralytic.
This parable teaches us that Jesus talks and acts with authority. Jesus’ faith has connected him to God the father, and he is automatically bestowed with all the fathers wisdom and abilities, which enables Jesus’ voice to have a commanding tone. A tone to be obeyed despite afflictions and that is exactly what Jesus’ command did, to the paralytic, this teaches us that our afflictions are not permanent and that when an authority stronger than us is before us, we can rise up and do away with the afflictions and walk home.
Through this, we can reflect on our own level of faith, is our faith strong enough to connect us to God the father, so that we also are bestowed with the fathers wisdom and the fathers abilities to be used to help those with little faith and afflictions to stand up and walk home. By strengthening and deepening our faith, our afflictions too will fall away, and we will walk home, in the knowledge that the Father is commanding us to know that our sins are forgiven. Amen.
7 The Canticle,
We praise you O God we claim you as Lord.
All creation worships you the father everlasting.
To you all angels all the powers of heaven the cherubim and the Serafim sing in endless praise.
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of power and might.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
The glorious company of apostles praise you:
the noble fellowship of prophets praise you:
the white robed army of martyrs praise you;
throughout the world the holy church acclaims you;
father of majesty unbounded.
Your true and only son, worthy of all praise, the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. You, Christ, are the king of glory, The eternal son of the father.
When you took our flesh to set us free; You humbly chose the virgin's womb.
You overcame the sting of death; And opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
You are seated at the God's right hand in glory; We believe that you will come to be our judge.
Come then, Lord, and help your people, bought with the price of your own blood; And bring us with your Saints to glory everlasting.
8 The Apostles’ Creed may be said.
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
9 The Prayers

Christ have mercy.
Lord have mercy.

1
O sing to the Lord a new song:
sing to the Lord all the earth.
Psalm 96.1
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
2 The Opening Canticle, The Song of the Three
Blessed are you, the God of our forebears:
worthy to be praised and exalted for ever. Blessed is your holy and glorious name: worthy to be praised and exalted for ever. Blessed are you, glorious in your holy temple: worthy to be praised and exalted for ever. Blessed are you who behold the depths: worthy to be praised and exalted for ever. Blessed are you on the throne of your kingdom: worthy to be praised and exalted for ever. Blessed are you in the heights of heaven: worthy to be praised and exalted for ever.
Song of the Three 29–34
3 The Opening Prayer
The day is now past and the night is at hand. Let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence may be kept.
Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our evening sacrifice; make us a light for all the world, delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
Amen.
4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 119.65–88
65 Lord, you have done good to your servant:
in accordance with your word.
66 O teach me right judgement and knowledge:
for I trust in your commandments.
67 Before I was afflicted, I went astray:
but now I keep your word.
68 You are good, and you do good:
O teach me your statutes.
69 The proud have smeared me with lies:
but I will keep your precepts with my whole heart.
70 Their hearts are gross like fat:
but my delight is in your law.
71 It is good for me that I was afflicted:
so I might learn your statutes.
72 The law of your mouth is dearer to me:
than a wealth of gold and silver.
73 Your hands have made me and fashioned me:
O give me understanding,
that I may learn your commandments.
74 Those who fear you shall see me and rejoice:
for my hope is in your word.
75 I know, Lord, that your judgements are right:
and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me.
76 Let your merciful kindness be my comfort:
according to your promise to your servant.
77 O let your mercy come to me that I may live:
for your law is my delight.
78 Let the proud be shamed
who steal my rights through their lies:
but I will meditate on your precepts.
79 Let those who fear you turn to me:
and they shall know your commands.
80 O let my heart be sound in your statutes:
that I may never be put to shame.
81 My soul languishes for your salvation:
but my hope is in your word;
82 My eyes fail with watching for your promise:
saying ‘O when will you comfort me?’
83 I am parched as a wineskin in the smoke:
yet I do not forget your statutes.
84 How many are the days of your servant:
and when will you judge my persecutors?
85 The proud have dug pitfalls for me:
in defiance of your law.
86 All your commandments are true:
but they persecute me with lies—O come to my help!
87 They have almost made an end of me on the earth:
but I have not forsaken your precepts.
88 In your merciful goodness give me life:
that I may keep the commands of your mouth.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
God of grace, we thank you for all your gifts to us: grant us to accept both pain and joy in faith and hope, and never to fail in love to you and to our sisters and brothers; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
Amen.
6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.
1st Reading is from the book of:
Ecclesiastes 8.14–9.6
14 There is a vanity that takes place on earth, that there are righteous people who are treated according to the conduct of the wicked, and there are wicked people who are treated according to the conduct of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity. 15 So I commend enjoyment, for there is nothing better for people under the sun than to eat, and drink, and enjoy themselves, for this will go with them in their toil through the days of life that God gives them under the sun. 16 When I applied my mind to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on earth, how one’s eyes see sleep neither day nor night, 17 then I saw all the work of God, that no one can find out what is happening under the sun. However, much they may toil in seeking, they will not find it out; even though those who are wise claim to know, they cannot find it out. 1 All this I laid to heart, examining it all, how the righteous and the wise and their deeds are in the hand of God; whether it is love or hate one does not know. Everything that confronts them 2 is vanity, since the same fate comes to all, to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil, to the clean and the unclean, to those who sacrifice and those who do not sacrifice. As are the good, so are the sinners; those who swear are like those who shun an oath.3 This is an evil in all that happens under the sun, that the same fate comes to everyone. Moreover, the hearts of all are full of evil; madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead. 4 But whoever is joined with all the living has hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion. 5 The living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no more reward, and even the memory of them is lost.6 Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished; never again will they have any share in all that happens under the sun.
2nd Reading is from the book of:
Revelation 11.15–19
15 Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying,‘The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign for ever and ever.’16 Then the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshipped God,17 singing,‘We give you thanks, Lord God Almighty, who are and who were, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign.18 The nations raged, but your wrath has come, and the time for judging the dead, for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints and all who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying those who destroy the earth.’19 Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple; and there were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail.
The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.
7 The Canticle, The Song of Simeon (Nunc Dimittis)
Now, Lord, you let your servant go in peace: your word has been fulfilled. My own eyes have seen the salvation: which you have prepared in the sight of every people: A light to reveal you to the nations: and the glory of your people Israel.
Luke 2.29–32

Romans 15.13
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of Hope
The spirit of the Lord God is upon me: because the Lord has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted. The Lord has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted: to proclaim liberty for the captives, and release for those in prison, To comfort all who mourn: to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning: a garment of splendour for the heavy heart. They shall be called trees of righteousness: planted for the glory of the Lord.
Isaiah 61.1–3
3 The Opening Prayer

Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our evening sacrifice; make us a light for all the world, delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 68.24–35
24 Your procession is seen, O God:
the procession of my God and King in the sanctuary.
25 The singers go before, the musicians come after:
and around them the maidens beating on the timbrels.
26 In their choirs they bless God:
those that are sprung from the fount of Israel bless the Lord.
27 There is the little tribe of Benjamin leading them:
the throng of the princes of Judah,
the princes of Zebulun and the princes of Naphtali.
28 Give the command, my God,
in accordance with your power:
that godlike power whereby you act for us.
29 Give the command from your temple at Jerusalem:
and kings shall bring you tribute.
30 Rebuke the beast of the reeds,
the herd of bulls amidst the brutish peoples:
tread down those that are greedy for silver,
scatter the peoples that relish war.
31 Let them bring bronze from Egypt:
let the hands of the Nubians carry it swiftly to God.
32 Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth:
O sing praises to the Lord,
33 To him that rides upon the highest heavens,
that were from the beginning:
who utters his voice, which is a mighty voice.
34 Ascribe power to God, whose majesty is over Israel:
and his might is in the clouds.
35 Terrible is God who comes from his holy place:
the God of Israel who gives power
and strength to his people. Blessed be God.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
God who wonderfully created us and even more wonderfully restored our humanity: strengthen us by your Holy Spirit to triumph over suffering and death, and grant us eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.
1st Reading
Ecclesiastes 8.1–13
1 Who is like the wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing?Wisdom makes one’s face shine, and the hardness of one’s countenance is changed. 2 Keep the king’s command because of your sacred oath. 3 Do not be terrified; go from his presence, do not delay when the matter is unpleasant, for he does whatever he pleases. 4 For the word of the king is powerful, and who can say to him, ‘What are you doing?’ 5 Whoever obeys a command will meet no harm, and the wise mind will know the time and way. 6 For every matter has its time and way, although the troubles of mortals lie heavy upon them. 7 Indeed, they do not know what is to be, for who can tell them how it will be? 8 No one has power over the wind to restrain the wind, or power over the day of death; there is no discharge from the battle, nor does wickedness deliver those who practise it. 9 All this I observed, applying my mind to all that is done under the sun, while one person exercises authority over another to the other’s hurt. 10 Then I saw the wicked buried; they used to go in and out of the holy place, and were praised in the city where they had done such things. This also is vanity. 11 Because sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the human heart is fully set to do evil. 12 Though sinners do evil a hundred times and prolong their lives, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God, because they stand in fear before him, 13 but it will not be well with the wicked, neither will they prolong their days like a shadow, because they do not stand in fear before God.
2nd Reading
Revelation 11.1–14
1 Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff, and I was told, ‘Come and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, 2 but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will trample over the holy city for forty-two months. 3 And I will grant my two witnesses’ authority to prophesy for one thousand two hundred and sixty days, wearing sackcloth.’ 4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. 5 And if anyone wants to harm them, fire pours from their mouth and consumes their foes; anyone who wants to harm them must be killed in this manner. 6 They have authority to shut the sky, so that no rain may fall during the days of their prophesying, and they have authority over the waters to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with every kind of plague, as often as they desire. 7 When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the bottomless pit will make war on them and conquer them and kill them, 8 and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city that is prophetically called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified. 9 For three and a half days members of the peoples and tribes and languages and nations will gaze at their dead bodies and refuse to let them be placed in a tomb; 10 and the inhabitants of the earth will gloat over them and celebrate and exchange presents, because these two prophets had been a torment to the inhabitants of the earth. 11 But after the three and a half days, the breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and those who saw them were terrified. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, ‘Come up here!’ And they went up to heaven in a cloud while their enemies watched them. 13 At that moment there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell; seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven. 14 The second woe has passed. The third woe is coming very soon.

May your word live in us

7 The Canticle, A Song of God’s Children
In Christ Jesus, the life-giving law of the Spirit: has set us free from the law of sin and death. All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God: it is the Spirit that enables us to cry, ‘Abba!’ Father. The Spirit bears witness that we are God’s children: and if God’s children, then heirs of God. We are heirs of God and fellow-heirs with Christ: If we share his sufferings now we shall be glorified with him hereafter. These sufferings that we now endure: are not worth comparing with the glory that shall be revealed. For the creation waits with eager longing: for the revealing of the children of God.
Romans 8.2, 14, 15b–19

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.
1st Reading
1 Samuel 16.2–13
2 Samuel said, ‘How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me.’ And the Lord said, ‘Take a heifer with you, and say, “I have come to sacrifice to the Lord .” 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you.’ 4 Samuel did what the Lord commanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, ‘Do you come peaceably?’ 5 He said, ‘Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord ; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.’ And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, ‘Surely the Lord ’s anointed is now before the Lord .’ 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.’ 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, ‘Neither has the Lord chosen this one.’ 9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, ‘Neither has the Lord chosen this one.’ 10 Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, ‘The Lord has not chosen any of these.’11 Samuel said to Jesse, ‘Are all your sons here?’ And he said, ‘There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.’ And Samuel said to Jesse, ‘Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.’ 12 He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. The Lord said, ‘Rise and anoint him; for this is the one.’ 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah.
2nd Reading
Matthew 21.1–11
1 When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, ‘Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, just say this, “The Lord needs them.” And he will send them immediately.’ 4 This took place to fulfil what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, 5 ‘Tell the daughter of Zion,Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ 6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; 7 they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting,‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!Hosanna in the highest heaven!’ 10 When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, ‘Who is this?’ 11 The crowds were saying, ‘This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.’
The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us

7 The Canticle, The Song of Mary (Magnificat)
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord: my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, Who has looked with favour on his lowly servant: from this day all generations will call me blessed; The Almighty has done great things for me: and holy is his name. God has mercy on those who fear him: from generation to generation. The Lord has shown strength with his arm: and scattered the proud in their conceit, Casting down the mighty from their thrones: and lifting up the lowly. God has filled the hungry with good things: and sent the rich away empty. He has come to the aid of his servant Israel: to remember the promise of mercy, The promise made to our forebears: to Abraham and his children for ever.
Luke 1.47–55

1
This is the day that the Lord has made.
We will rejoice and be glad in it.
Psalm 118.24
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
Christ the King / The Reign of Christ
O shout to the Lord in triumph all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness and come before his face with songs of joy. Psalm 100.1
2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of Triumph (Venite)
O come, let us sing out to the Lord: let us shout in triumph to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his face with thanksgiving: and cry out to him joyfully in psalms. For the Lord is a great God: and a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth: w and the peaks of the mountains are his also. The sea is his and he made it: his hands moulded dry land. Come, let us worship and bow down: and kneel before the Lord our maker. For he is the Lord our God: we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Today if only you would hear his voice: ‘Do not harden your hearts as Israel did in the wilderness; ‘When your forebears tested me: put me to proof though they had seen my works. ‘Forty years long I loathed that generation and said: “It is a people who err in their hearts, for they do not know my ways”; ‘Of whom I swore in my wrath: “They shall not enter my rest.”’
Psalm 95

7 The Canticle, The Song of Zechariah (Benedictus)
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel: who has come to his people and set them free. The Lord has raised up for us a mighty Saviour: born of the house of his servant David. Through the holy prophets, God promised of old: to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us, To show mercy to our forebears: and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear: holy and righteous before him, all the days of our life. And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High: for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation: by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God: the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death: and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Luke 1.68–79
Amen.

Welcome to Saturday evening prayer according to the Anglican ‘A prayer book for Australia’.
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessed be God forever;
Let us pray.
1
Grace to you and peace
from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 1.2
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of the Shepherd
The Lord is my shepherd: therefore can I lack nothing. He shall make me lie down in green pastures: and lead me beside still waters. He shall refresh my soul: and guide me in right pathways for his name’s sake. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for you are with me; your rod and your staff comfort me. You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me: you have anointed my head with oil, and my cup shall be full. Surely your goodness and loving-kindness shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Psalm 23
3 The Opening Prayer
The day is now past and the night is at hand.
Let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence may be kept.
Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our evening sacrifice; make us a light for all the world, delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
Amen.
4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 64; 67
64
1 Hear my voice, O God, in my complaining:
preserve my life from fear of the enemy.
2 Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked:
from the throng of evildoers,
3 Who sharpen their tongues like swords:
who string the bow, who take arrows of bitter words,
4 To shoot from hiding at the blameless:
to strike at them suddenly and unseen.
5 They are confirmed in an evil purpose:
they confide it to one another while they lay the snares,
saying ‘Who will see them?’
6 They hatch mischief, they hide a well-considered plan:
for the human heart and mind are very deep.
7 But God will shoot at them with his swift arrows:
they shall be suddenly struck through.
8 The Lord will bring them down
for what their tongues have spoken:
and all that see it shall toss their heads in scorn.
9 Then all shall fear:
and tell what the Lord has done, and ponder his works.
10 The righteous shall rejoice in the Lord,
and find in him their refuge:
and all the upright in heart shall exult.
67
1 Let God be gracious to us and bless us:
and make his face shine upon us,
2 That your ways may be known on earth:
your liberating power among all nations.
3 Let the peoples praise you, O God:
let all the peoples praise you.
4 Let the nations be glad and sing:
for you judge the peoples with integrity,
and govern the nations upon earth.
5 Let the peoples praise you, O God:
let all the peoples praise you.
6 Then the earth will yield its fruitfulness:
and God, our God, will bless us.
7 God shall bless us:
and all the ends of the earth will fear him.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
Lord Christ, eternal Word and Light of the Father’s glory: send your light and your truth that we may both know and proclaim your word of life, to the glory of God the Father; for you now live and reign, God for all eternity.
Amen.
6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.
1st Reading
Ecclesiastes 7.14–29
14 On the day of prosperity be joyful, and on the day of adversity consider; God has made the one as well as the other, so that mortals may not find out anything that will come after them. 15 In my vain life I have seen everything; there are righteous people who perish in their righteousness, and there are wicked people who prolong their life in their evildoing. 16 Do not be too righteous, and do not act too wise; why should you destroy yourself? 17 Do not be too wicked, and do not be a fool; why should you die before your time? 18 It is good that you should take hold of the one, without letting go of the other; for the one who fears God shall succeed with both. 19 Wisdom gives strength to the wise more than ten rulers that are in a city. 20 Surely there is no one on earth so righteous as to do good without ever sinning. 21 Do not give heed to everything that people say, or you may hear your servant cursing you; 22 your heart knows that many times you have yourself cursed others. 23 All this I have tested by wisdom; I said, ‘I will be wise’, but it was far from me. 24 That which is, is far off, and deep, very deep; who can find it out? 25 I turned my mind to know and to search out and to seek wisdom and the sum of things, and to know that wickedness is folly and that foolishness is madness. 26 I found more bitter than death the woman who is a trap, whose heart is snares and nets, whose hands are fetters; one who pleases God escapes her, but the sinner is taken by her. 27 See, this is what I found, says the Teacher, adding one thing to another to find the sum, 28 which my mind has sought repeatedly, but I have not found. One man among a thousand I found, but a woman among all these I have not found. 29 See, this alone I found, that God made human beings straightforward, but they have devised many schemes.
2nd Reading
Revelation 10
1 And I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven, wrapped in a cloud, with a rainbow over his head; his face was like the sun, and his legs like pillars of fire. 2 He held a little scroll open in his hand. Setting his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, 3 he gave a great shout, like a lion roaring. And when he shouted, the seven thunders sounded. 4 And when the seven thunders had sounded, I was about to write, but I heard a voice from heaven saying, ‘Seal up what the seven thunders have said, and do not write it down.’ 5 Then the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and the landraised his right hand to heaven 6 and swore by him who lives for ever and ever, who created heaven and what is in it, the earth and what is in it, and the sea and what is in it: ‘There will be no more delay, 7 but in the days when the seventh angel is to blow his trumpet, the mystery of God will be fulfilled, as he announced to his servants the prophets.’ 8 Then the voice that I had heard from heaven spoke to me again, saying, ‘Go, take the scroll that is open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.’ 9 So I went to the angel and told him to give me the little scroll; and he said to me, ‘Take it, and eat; it will be bitter to your stomach, but sweet as honey in your mouth.’ 10 So I took the little scroll from the hand of the angel and ate it; it was sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it, my stomach was made bitter. 11 Then they said to me, ‘You must prophesy again about many peoples and nations and languages and kings.’
The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.
7 The Canticle, the Easter Anthems
Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us:
so let us celebrate the feast,
Not with the old leaven of corruption and wickedness: but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ once raised from the dead dies no more: death has no more dominion over him. In dying, he died to sin once for all: in living, he lives to God. See yourselves, therefore, as dead to sin: and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Christ has been raised from the dead: the first fruits of those who sleep. For since by one man came death: by another has come also the resurrection of the dead, For as in Adam all die:
even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
8 The Prayers
Lord have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
Lord have mercy.
9 The Lord’s Prayer and the Collect of the Day
Accept our prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord, who taught us to pray;
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.

3 The Opening Prayer
The night has passed and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence may be kept.
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever.
Amen.
4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 62; 63
62
1 My soul waits in silence for God:
for from him comes my salvation.
2 He only is my rock and my salvation:
my strong tower, so that I shall never be moved.
3 How long will you all plot against me to destroy me:
as though I were a leaning fence or a buckling wall?
4 Their design is to thrust me from my height,
and their delight is in lies:
they bless with their lips, but inwardly they curse.
5 Nevertheless, my soul, wait in silence for God:
for from him comes my hope.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation:
my strong tower, so that I shall not be moved.
7 In God is my deliverance and my glory:
God is my strong rock and my shelter.
8 Trust in him at all times, O my people:
pour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge.
9 The children of Adam are but breath,
the children of earth are a lie:
place them in the scales and they fly upward,
they are as light as air.
10 Put no trust in extortion,
do not grow worthless by robbery:
if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.
11 God has spoken once, twice have I heard him say:
that power belongs to God,
12 That to the Lord belongs a constant goodness:
for you reward each one of us according to our works.
63
1 O God, you are my God:
eagerly will I seek you.
2 My soul thirsts for you, my flesh longs for you:
as a dry and thirsty land where no water is.
3 So it was when I beheld you in the sanctuary:
and saw your power and your glory.
4 For your unchanging goodness is better than life:
therefore my lips shall praise you.
5 And so I will bless you as long as I live:
and in your name will I lift my hands on high.
6 My longing shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness:
my mouth shall praise you with exultant lips.
7 When I remember you upon my bed:
when I meditate upon you in the night watches,
8 How you have been my helper:
then I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings,
9 Then my soul clings to you:
and your right hand upholds me.
10 Those that seek my life are marked for destruction:
they shall go down to the deep places of the earth.
11 They shall be delivered to the sword:
they shall be a portion for jackals.
12 The king will rejoice in God,
and all who take oaths on his name shall glory:
but the mouths of liars shall be stopped.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
Creator God, whose praise and power are proclaimed by the whole creation: receive our morning prayers, we pray, and renew us in your service; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.
1st Reading
2 Kings 22.12–23.3
12 Then the king commanded the priest Hil-kiah, Ahi-kam son of Sha-phan, Ach-bor son of Mica-iah, Shaphan the secretary, and the king’s servant Asa-iah, saying, 13 ‘Go, inquire of the Lord for me, for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that has been found; for great is the wrath of the Lord that is kindled against us, because our ancestors did not obey the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us.’ 14 So the priest Hilkiah, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to the prophetess Hul-dah the wife of Shallum son of Tik-vah, son of Har-has, keeper of the wardrobe; she resided in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter, where they consulted her. 15 She declared to them, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Tell the man who sent you to me, 16 Thus says the Lord , I will indeed bring disaster on this place and on its inhabitants—all the words of the book that the king of Judah has read. 17 Because they have abandoned me and have made offerings to other gods, so that they have provoked me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath will be kindled against this place, and it will not be quenched. 18 But as to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the Lord , thus shall you say to him, Thus says the Lord , the God of Israel: Regarding the words that you have heard, 19 because your heart was penitent, and you humbled yourself before the Lord , when you heard how I spoke against this place, and against its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and because you have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you, says the Lord . 20 Therefore, I will gather you to your ancestors, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace; your eyes shall not see all the disaster that I will bring on this place.’ They took the message back to the king. 1 Then the king directed that all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem should be gathered to him. 2 The king went up to the house of the Lord , and with him went all the people of Judah, all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests, the prophets, and all the people, both small and great; he read in their hearing all the words of the book of the covenant that had been found in the house of the Lord . 3 The king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the Lord , to follow the Lord , keeping his commandments, his decrees, and his statutes, with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. All the people joined in the covenant.
2nd Reading
Mark 1.14–28
14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15 and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.’ 16 As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake—for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fish for people.’ 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. 21 They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. 22 They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23 Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, 24 and he cried out, ‘What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.’ 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Be silent, and come out of him!’ 26 And the unclean spirit, throwing him into convulsions and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, ‘What is this? A new teaching—with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.’ 28 At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.
The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us

7 The Canticle, A Song of Redemption
Christ is the image of the invisible God: the first-born of all creation. For in him all things were created: in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible. All things were created through him and for him: he is before all things and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the Church: he is the beginning, the first-born from the dead. For it pleased God that in him all fullness should dwell: and through him all things be reconciled to himself.
Colossians 1.15–20
Lord have mercy.
Christ have mercy.

Prayer Transcript:
Welcome to Friday Evening Prayer according to the Anglican ‘A Prayer book for Australia’.
Let us pray:
1
Peace to those who are far off.
Peace to those who are near.
Ephesians 2.17
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
2 The Opening Canticle, The Lord’s Servant
He was despised; he was rejected: a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. As one from whom people hide their faces: he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Ours were the sufferings he bore: ours the torments he endured, While we thought he was being punished: struck by God and brought low. He was pierced for our sins: bruised for no fault but ours. His punishment has won our peace: and by his wounds we are healed. We had all strayed like sheep: all taking our own way; But the Lord laid on him: the guilt of us all.
Isaiah 53.3–6
3 The Opening Prayer
The day is now past and the night is at hand.
Let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence may be kept.
Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our evening sacrifice; make us a light for all the world, delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
Amen.
4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 60; 61
60
1 O God, you have cast us off and broken us:
you were enraged against us—O restore us again!
2 You have caused the land to quake, you have rent it open:
heal the rifts, for the earth quivers and breaks.
3 You have steeped your people in a bitter draught:
you have given them a wine to make them stagger.
4 You have caused those that fear you to take flight:
so that they run from the bow.
5 O save us by your right hand, and answer us:
that those whom you love may be delivered.
6 God has said in his holy place:
‘I will exult and divide Shechem,
I will parcel out the valley of Succoth.
7 ‘Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine:
Ephraim is my helmet, and Judah my rod of command.
8 ‘Moab is my wash-bowl, over Edom will I cast my shoe:
against Philistia will I shout in triumph.’
9 Who will lead me into the fortified city:
who will bring me into Edom?
10 Have you not cast us off, O God?:
you go not out with our armies.
11 Give us your help against the enemy:
for human help is vain.
12 By the power of our God we shall do valiantly:
for it is he that will tread down our enemies.
61
1 Hear my loud crying, O God:
and give heed to my prayer.
2 From the ends of the earth I call to you
when my heart faints:
O set me on the rock that is higher than I.
3 For you have been my refuge:
and my strong tower against the enemy.
4 I will dwell in your tent for ever:
and find shelter in the covering of your wings.
5 For you have heard my vows, O God:
you have granted the desire of those that fear your name.
6 You will give the king long life:
and his years shall endure through many generations.
7 He shall dwell before God for ever:
loving-kindness and truth shall be his guard.
8 So will I ever sing praises to your name:
while I daily perform my vows.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
Holy Spirit, sanctifier, cleanse us from all hypocrisy, unite us to one another in the bonds of peace and love, and confirm us in holiness, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.
1st Reading
Ecclesiastes 6.10–7.13
10 Whatever has come to be, has already been named, and it is known what human beings are, and that they are not able to dispute with those who are stronger. 11 The more words, the more vanity, so how is one the better? 12 For who knows what is good for mortals while they live the few days of their vain life, which they pass like a shadow? For who can tell them what will be after them under the sun? 1 A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death, than the day of birth. 2 It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting;for this is the end of everyone, and the living will lay it to heart. 3 Sorrow is better than laughter, for by sadness of countenance the heart is made glad. 4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. 5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of fools. 6 For like the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of fools; this also is vanity. 7 Surely oppression makes the wise foolish, and a bribe corrupts the heart. 8 Better is the end of a thing than its beginning; the patient in spirit are better than the proud in spirit. 9 Do not be quick to anger, for anger lodges in the bosom of fools. 10 Do not say, ‘Why were the former days better than these?’ For it is not from wisdom that you ask this. 11 Wisdom is as good as an inheritance, an advantage to those who see the sun. 12 For the protection of wisdom is like the protection of money, and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to the one who possesses it. 13 Consider the work of God; who can make straight what he has made crooked?
2nd Reading
Revelation 9.13–21
13 Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, ‘Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.’ 15 So the four angels were released, who had been held ready for the hour, the day, the month, and the year, to kill a third of humankind. 16 The number of the troops of cavalry was two hundred million; I heard their number. 17 And this was how I saw the horses in my vision: the riders wore breastplates the colour of fire and of sapphire and of sulphur; the heads of the horses were like lions’ heads, and fire and smoke and sulphur came out of their mouths. 18 By these three plagues a third of humankind was killed, by the fire and smoke and sulphur coming out of their mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; their tails are like serpents, having heads; and with them they inflict harm. 20 The rest of humankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands or give up worshipping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk. 21 And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their fornication or their thefts.
The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us

7 The Canticle, A Song to the Lamb
You are worthy, our Lord and God: to receive glory and honour and power. For you have created all things: and by your will they have their being. You are worthy, O Lamb, for you were slain: and by your blood you ransomed for God saints from every tribe and language and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests serving our God: and they will reign with you on earth. To the One who sits on the throne and to the Lamb: be blessing and honour and glory and might, for ever and ever. Amen.
Revelation 4.11; 5.9b–10
