Let us Pray.

God’s love has been poured into our hearts,

as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of God’s Marvellous Acts
I will sing a new hymn to my God: O Lord you are great and marvellous, you are marvellous in your strength, invincible. Let the whole creation serve you: for you spoke and all things came to be; You sent out your Spirit and it formed them: no one can resist your voice. Mountains and seas are stirred to their depths: rocks melt like wax at your presence; But to those who revere you: you still show mercy.
Judith 16.13–15

‘Behold, God is my salvation: I will trust and will not be afraid; ‘For the Lord God is my strength and my song: and has become my salvation.’ With joy you will draw water: from the wells of salvation. On that day you will say: ‘Give thanks to the Lord, call upon his name; ‘Make known his deeds among the nations: proclaim that his name is exalted. ‘Sing God’s praises, who has triumphed gloriously: let this be known in all the world. ‘Shout and sing for joy, you that dwell in Zion: for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.’
Isaiah 12.2–6
8 The Apostles’ Creed may be said.
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Lord have mercy.

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord: my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, Who has looked with favour on his lowly servant: from this day all generations will call me blessed; The Almighty has done great things for me: and holy is his name. God has mercy on those who fear him: from generation to generation. The Lord has shown strength with his arm: and scattered the proud in their conceit, Casting down the mighty from their thrones: and lifting up the lowly. Psalm 118.24
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of Triumph (Venite)
O come, let us sing out to the Lord: let us shout in triumph to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his face with thanksgiving: and cry out to him joyfully in psalms. For the Lord is a great God: and a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth: w and the peaks of the mountains are his also. The sea is his and he made it: his hands moulded dry land. Come, let us worship and bow down: and kneel before the Lord our maker. For he is the Lord our God: we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Today if only you would hear his voice: ‘Do not harden your hearts as Israel did in the wilderness; ‘When your forebears tested me: put me to proof though they had seen my works. ‘Forty years long I loathed that generation and said: “It is a people who err in their hearts, for they do not know my ways”; ‘Of whom I swore in my wrath: “They shall not enter my rest.”’

7 The Canticle, The Song of Zechariah (Benedictus)
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel: who has come to his people and set them free. The Lord has raised up for us a mighty Saviour: born of the house of his servant David. Through the holy prophets, God promised of old: to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us, To show mercy to our forebears: and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear: holy and righteous before him, all the days of our life. And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High: for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation: by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God: the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death: and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Luke 1.68–79

Ephesians 1.2
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of the Shepherd
The Lord is my shepherd: therefore can I lack nothing. He shall make me lie down in green pastures: and lead me beside still waters. He shall refresh my soul: and guide me in right pathways for his name’s sake. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for you are with me; your rod and your staff comfort me. You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me: you have anointed my head with oil, and my cup shall be full. Surely your goodness and loving-kindness shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Psalm 23

7 The Canticle, the Easter Anthems
Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us:
so let us celebrate the feast,
Not with the old leaven of corruption and wickedness: but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ once raised from the dead dies no more: death has no more dominion over him. In dying, he died to sin once for all: in living, he lives to God. See yourselves, therefore, as dead to sin: and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Christ has been raised from the dead: the first fruits of those who sleep. For since by one man came death: by another has come also the resurrection of the dead, For as in Adam all die:
even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
8 The Prayers
Lord have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
Lord have mercy.
9 The Lord’s Prayer and the Collect of the Day
Accept our prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord, who taught us to pray;
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.

Amen.
6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

7 The Canticle, A Song of Redemption
Christ is the image of the invisible God: the first-born of all creation. For in him all things were created: in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible. All things were created through him and for him: he is before all things and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the Church: he is the beginning, the first-born from the dead. For it pleased God that in him all fullness should dwell: and through him all things be reconciled to himself.
Colossians 1.15–20
Amen.
9 The Prayers
Lord have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
Lord have mercy.
10 The Lord’s Prayer and the Collect of the Day

now and for ever. Amen.

Welcome to Friday Evening prayer from the Anglican ‘A prayer book for Australia’.
We share the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ:
GOD in his infinite mercy, forgives all sins, and through our baptism in the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, we are given a rebirth into new life, free from the burden of all sin. ALLELUIA
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessed be God forever.
Let us Pray.
1
Peace to those who are far off.
Peace to those who are near.
Ephesians 2.17
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
2 The Opening Canticle, The Lord’s Servant
He was despised; he was rejected: a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. As one from whom people hide their faces: he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Ours were the sufferings he bore: ours the torments he endured, While we thought he was being punished: struck by God and brought low. He was pierced for our sins: bruised for no fault but ours. His punishment has won our peace: and by his wounds we are healed. We had all strayed like sheep: all taking our own way; But the Lord laid on him: the guilt of us all.
Isaiah 53.3–6
3 The Opening Prayer
The day is now past and the night is at hand.
Let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence may be kept.
Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our evening sacrifice; make us a light for all the world, delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
Amen.
4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 75; 76
75
1 We give you thanks, O God, we give you thanks:
we call upon your name and tell of all the wonders you have done.
2 ‘I will surely appoint a time:
when I, the Lord, will judge with equity.
3 ‘Though the earth shake, and all who dwell in it:
it is I that have founded its pillars.
4 ‘I will say to the boasters “Boast no more”:
and to the wicked “Do not flaunt your horns;
5 ‘“Do not flaunt your horns so high:
or speak so proud and stiff-necked.”’
6 For there is none from the east or from the west:
or from the wilderness who can raise up;
7 But it is God who is the judge:
who puts down one and exalts another.
8 For there is a cup in the Lord’s hand:
and the wine foams and is richly mixed;
9 He gives it in turn to each of the wicked of the earth:
they drink it and drain it to the dregs.
10 But I will sing praises to the God of Jacob:
I will glorify his name for ever.
11 All the horns of the wicked I will break:
but the horns of the righteous shall be lifted high.
76
1 In Judah God is known:
his name is great in Israel.
2 At Salem is his tabernacle:
and his dwelling is in Zion.
3 There he broke in pieces the flashing arrows of the bow:
the shield, the sword and the weapons of battle.
4 Radiant in light are you:
greater in majesty than the eternal hills.
5 The valiant were dumbfounded, they sleep their sleep:
and all the warriors have lost their strength.
6 At the blast of your voice, O God of Jacob:
both horse and chariot were cast asleep.
7 Terrible are you, Lord God:
and who may stand before you when you are angry?
8 You caused your sentence to be heard from heaven:
the earth feared and was still,
9 When God arose to judgement:
to save all the meek of the earth.
10 For you crushed human wrath:
you bridled the remnant of the wrathful.
11 O make vows to the Lord your God, and keep them:
let all around him bring gifts to him that is worthy to be feared.
12 For he cuts down the fury of princes:
and he is terrible to the kings of the earth.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
Holy Spirit, sanctifier, cleanse us from all hypocrisy, unite us to one another in the bonds of peace and love, and confirm us in holiness, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.
The 1st Reading is from the book of Ecclesiastes beginning at chapter 10. Verse 16:
16 Alas for you, O land, when your king is a servant, and your princes feast in the morning! 17 Happy are you, O land, when your king is a nobleman, and your princes feast at the proper time— for strength, and not for drunkenness! 18 Through sloth the roof sinks in, and through indolence the house leaks. 19 Feasts are made for laughter; wine gladdens life, and money meets every need. 20 Do not curse the king, even in your thoughts, or curse the rich, even in your bedroom;for a bird of the air may carry your voice, or some winged creature tell the matter. 1 Send out your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will get it back. 2 Divide your means seven ways, or even eight, for you do not know what disaster may happen on earth. 3 When clouds are full, they empty rain on the earth;whether a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where the tree falls, there it will lie. 4 Whoever observes the wind will not sow; and whoever regards the clouds will not reap. 5 Just as you, do not know, how the breath comes to the bones, in the mother’s womb, so you do not know, the work of God, who makes everything. 6 In the morning sow your seed, and at evening do not let your hands be idle;
for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good. 7 Light is sweet, and it is pleasant for the eyes to see the sun. 8 Even those who live for many years should rejoice in them all;
yet let them remember that the days of darkness will be many.
All that comes is vanity.
2nd Reading
Revelation 13.1–10
1 And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads; and on its horns were ten diadems, and on its heads were blasphemous names. 2 And the beast that I saw was like a leopard, its feet were like a bear’s, and its mouth was like a lion’s mouth. And the dragon gave it his power and his throne and great authority. 3 One of its heads seemed to have received a deathblow, but its mortal wound had been healed. In amazement the whole earth followed the beast. 4 They worshipped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshipped the beast, saying, ‘Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?’ 5 The beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. 6 It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling, that is, those who dwell in heaven. 7 Also, it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. It was given authority over every tribe and people and language and nation, 8 and all the inhabitants of the earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb that was slaughtered. 9 Let anyone who has an ear listen: 10 If you are to be taken captive, into captivity you go; if you kill with the sword, with the sword you must be killed. Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints.
The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.
7 The Canticle, A Song to the Lamb
You are worthy, our Lord and God: to receive glory and honour and power. For you have created all things: and by your will they have their being. You are worthy, O Lamb, for you were slain: and by your blood you ransomed for God saints from every tribe and language and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests serving our God: and they will reign with you on earth. To the One who sits on the throne and to the Lamb: be blessing and honour and glory and might, for ever and ever. Amen.
Revelation 4.11; 5.9b–10
8 The Prayers

Christ have mercy.

now and for ever. Amen.

Through Christ let us offer up a sacrifice of praise to God,
the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.
Hebrews 13.15
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of God’s Grace
We have complete freedom: to go into the most holy place by means of the death of Jesus. He opened for us a new way, a living way: through the curtain, through his own body. Since we have a great high priest set over the household of God: let us draw near with a sincere heart and a sure faith, With hearts that have been made clean from a guilty conscience: and bodies washed with pure water.
Hebrews 10.19–22
3 The Opening Prayer
The night has passed and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence may be kept.
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever.
Amen.
4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 74
5 At the end of the last there may follow.
Holy God, through your beloved son you reconciled all things to yourself, making peace by the blood of his cross: fill us and those for whom we pray with your peace and joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.
1st Reading
2 Kings 25.8–21
8In the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month—which was the nineteenth year of King Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon—Nebuzaradan, the captain of the bodyguard, a servant of the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem. 9He burned the house of the Lord, the king's house, and all the houses of Jerusalem; every great house he burned down.
10All the army of the Chaldeans who were with the captain of the guard broke down the walls around Jerusalem. 11Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried into exile the rest of the people who were left in the city and the deserters who had defected to the king of Babylon—all the rest of the population. 12But the captain of the guard left some of the poorest people of the land to be vinedressers and tillers of the soil.
13The bronze pillars that were in the house of the Lord, as well as the stands and the bronze sea that were in the house of the Lord, the Chaldeans broke in pieces, and carried the bronze to Babylon. 14They took away the pots, the shovels, the snuffers, the dishes for incense, and all the bronze vessels used in the temple service, 15as well as the firepans and the basins. What was made of gold the captain of the guard took away for the gold, and what was made of silver, for the silver.
16As for the two pillars, the one sea, and the stands, which Solomon had made for the house of the Lord, the bronze of all these vessels was beyond weighing. 17The height of the one pillar was eighteen cubits, and on it was a bronze capital; the height of the capital was three cubits; latticework and pomegranates, all of bronze, were on the capital all around. The second pillar had the same, with the latticework.
18The captain of the guard took the chief priest Seraiah, the second priest Zephaniah, and the three guardians of the threshold; 19from the city he took an officer who had been in command of the soldiers, and five men of the king's council who were found in the city; the secretary who was the commander of the army who mustered the people of the land; and sixty men of the people of the land who were found in the city.
20Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard took them and brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah. 21The king of Babylon struck them down and put them to death at Riblah in the land of Hamath. So, Judah went into exile out of its land.
2nd Reading
Mark 3.7–19a
7Jesus departed with his disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from Galilee followed him; 8hearing all that he was doing, they came to him in great numbers from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, beyond the Jordan, and the region around Tyre and Sidon.
9He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush him; 10for he had cured many, so that all who had diseases pressed upon him to touch him. 11Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and shouted, “You are the Son of God!” 12But he sternly ordered them not to make him known.
13He went up the mountain and called to him those whom he wanted, and they came to him. 14And he appointed twelve, whom he also named apostles, to be with him, and to be sent out to proclaim the message, 15and to have authority to cast out demons. 16So he appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter);
17James son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); 18and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean, 19and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.
7 The Canticle, Saviour of the World
Jesus, Saviour of the world, come to us in your mercy: we look to you to save and help us. By your cross and your life laid down, you set your people free: we look to you to save and help us. When they were ready to perish, you saved your disciples: we look to you to come to our help. In the greatness of your mercy, loose us from our chains: forgive the sins of all your people. Make yourself known as our saviour and mighty deliverer: save and help us that we may praise you. Come now and dwell with us, Lord Christ Jesus: hear our prayer and be with us always. And when you come in your glory: make us to be one with you
and to share the life of your kingdom.
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessed be God forever.

1
The Lord our God the Almighty reigns.
Let us rejoice and exult and give God the glory.
Revelation 19.6–7
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen
2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of Joy
Be joyful in the Lord, all the earth: serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with singing. Know that the Lord is God: it is he who has made us, and we are his; for we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise: give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good; his loving-kindness is everlasting: and his faithfulness endures from age to age.
Psalm 100
3 The Opening Prayer
The day is now past and the night is at hand.
Let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence may be kept.
Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our evening sacrifice; make us a light for all the world, delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
Amen.
4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 73
1 God is indeed good to Israel:
to those whose hearts are pure.
2 Nevertheless, my feet were almost gone:
my steps had well-nigh slipped.
3 For I was filled with envy at the boastful:
when I saw the ungodly had such tranquillity.
4 For they suffer no pain:
and their bodies are hale and fat.
5 They come to no misfortune like other folk:
nor are they plagued as others are.
6 Therefore they put on pride as a necklace:
and clothe themselves in violence as in a garment.
7 Their eyes shine from folds of fatness:
and they have all that heart could wish.
8 Their talk is malice and mockery:
and they hand down slanders from on high.
9 Their mouths blaspheme against heaven:
and their tongues go to and fro on earth.
10 Therefore my people turn to them:
and find in them no fault.
11 They say ‘How can God know:
is there understanding in the Most High?’
12 Behold, these are the ungodly:
yet they prosper and increase in riches.
13 Was it for nothing then that I cleansed my heart:
and washed my hands in innocence?
14 Have I been stricken all day long in vain:
and rebuked every morning?
15 If I had said ‘I will speak thus’:
I should have betrayed the family of your children.
16 Then I thought to understand this:
but it was too hard for me,
17 Till I went into the sanctuary of God:
and then I understood what their end will be.
18 For you set them in slippery places:
and cause them to fall from their treacherous footholds.
19 How suddenly they are laid waste:
they come to an end, they perish in terror.
20 As with a dream when one awakes:
so when you rouse yourself, O Lord,
you will despise their image.
21 When my heart was soured:
and I was wounded to the core,
22 I was but brutish and ignorant:
no better than a beast before you.
23 Nevertheless, I am always with you:
for you hold me by my right hand.
24 You will guide me with your counsel:
and afterwards you will lead me to glory.
25 Whom have I in heaven but you?:
and there is no one upon earth
that I desire in comparison with you.
26 Though my flesh and my heart fail me:
you, O God, are my portion for ever.
27 Behold, those who forsake you shall perish:
and all who whore after other gods you will destroy.
28 But it is good for me to draw near to God:
I have made the Lord God my refuge,
and I will tell of all that you have done.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
God our saviour, you sent Jesus into the world of sin, and delivered him up to death for us: kindle in our hearts the same love with which he loved his own to the end; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

17 The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded than the shouting of a ruler among fools. 18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one bungler destroys much good. 1 Dead flies make the perfumer’s ointment give off a foul odour; so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honour. 2 The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of a fool to the left. 3 Even when fools walk on the road, they lack sense, and show to everyone that they are fools. 4 If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your post, for calmness will undo great offences. 5 There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, as great an error as if it proceeded from the ruler: 6 folly is set in many high places, and the rich sit in a low place. 7 I have seen slaves on horseback, and princes walking on foot like slaves. 8 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it; and whoever breaks through a wall will be bitten by a snake. 9 Whoever quarries stones will be hurt by them; and whoever splits logs will be endangered by them. 10 If the iron is blunt, and one does not whet the edge, then more strength must be exerted; but wisdom helps one to succeed. 11 If the snake bites before it is charmed, there is no advantage in a charmer. 12 Words spoken by the wise bring them favour, but the lips of fools consume them. 13 The words of their mouths begin in foolishness, and their talk ends in wicked madness; 14 yet fools talk on and on. No one knows what is to happen, and who can tell anyone what the future holds? 15 The toil of fools wears them out, for they do not even know the way to town.
2nd Reading
Revelation 12.7–18
7 And war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, 8 but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. 9 The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming,‘Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah, for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. 11 But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not cling to life even in the face of death. 12 Rejoice then, you heavens and those who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to youwith great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!’ 13 So when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle, so that she could fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to her place where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time. 15 Then from his mouth the serpent poured water like a river after the woman, to sweep her away with the flood. 16 But the earth came to the help of the woman; it opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth. 17 Then the dragon was angry with the woman, and went off to make war on the rest of her children, those who keep the commandments of God and hold the testimony of Jesus. 18 Then the dragon took his stand on the sand of the seashore.
The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.
7 The Canticle,
Christ Jesus was in the form of God:
But he did not cling to equality with God.
He emptied himself, taking the form of a servant:
And was born in our human likeness.
Being found in human form, he humbled himself:
And became obedient unto death,
Even death on a cross.
Therefore, God has highly exalted him:
And bestowed on him the name above every name,
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow:
In heaven and on earth and under the earth;
And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord:
to the glory of God the father.
Philippians 2.5b–11

Welcome to Thursday Morning prayer from the Anglican ‘A prayer book for Australia’.
We share the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ:
GOD in his infinite mercy, forgives all sins, and through our baptism in the name of our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, we are given a rebirth into new life, free from the burden of all sin. ALLELUIA
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessed be God forever.
Let us Pray.
1
This is the message we have heard from Christ:
That God is light, in whom there is no darkness at all.
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of God’s Grace
Go up to a high mountain
Herald of good tidings to Zion:
Lift up your voice with strength,
Herald of good tidings to Jerusalem.
Lift up your voice, fear not:
Say to the cities of Judah, ‘Behold your God!’
See the Lord God coming with power:
Coming to rule with his mighty arm.
He brings his reward for the people of God:
the recompense for those who are saved.
God will feed his flock like a shepherd:
And gather the lambs in his arms;
He will hold them to his breast:
And gently lead those that are with young.
Isaiah 40.9-11
3 The Opening Prayer
The night has now passed and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence may be kept.
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever.
Amen.
4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 147.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
Almighty God, who wonderfully created us in your own image and yet more wonderfully restored us in your son Jesus Christ: grant that as he came to share our human nature so we may be partakers in his divine glory; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit caught, one God now and forever.
Amen.
6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.
1st Reading is from Isaiah 49. 1-9a.
Listen to me, O coastlands,
pay attention, you peoples from far away!
The Lord called me before I was born,
while I was in my mother's womb, he named me.
2He made my mouth like a sharp sword,
in the shadow of his hand, he hid me;
he made me a polished arrow,
in his quiver he hid me away.
3And he said to me, “You are my servant,
Israel, in whom I will be glorified.”
4But I said, “I have laboured in vain,
I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity;
yet surely my cause is with the Lord,
and my reward with my God.”
5And now the Lord says,
who formed me in the womb to be his servant,
to bring Jacob back to him,
and that Israel might be gathered to him,
for I am honoured in the sight of the Lord,
and my God has become my strength—
6he says,
“It is too light a thing that you should be my servant
to raise up the tribes of Jacob
and to restore the survivors of Israel;
I will give you as a light to the nations,
that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”
7Thus says the Lord,
the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One,
to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nations,
the slave of rulers,
“Kings shall see and stand up,
princes, and they shall prostrate themselves,
because of the Lord, who is faithful,
the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”
8Thus says the Lord:
In a time of favour, I have answered you,
on a day of salvation, I have helped you;
I have kept you and given you
as a covenant to the people,
to establish the land,
to apportion the desolate heritages;
9saying to the prisoners, “Come out,”
to those who are in darkness, “Show yourselves.”
2nd Reading is from the gospel according to - John 1. 35-42.
35.The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples,
36.and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!”
37.The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.
38.When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?”
39.He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon.
40.One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.
41.He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed).
42.He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon, son of John. You are to be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).
7 The Canticle,
In the beginning was the word:
and the word was with God,
and the word was god:
he was in the beginning with god.
all things were made through him:
and without him, was not anything made that was made.
In him was life:
And the life was the light of all the people.
The light shines in the darkness:
And the darkness has not overcome it.
He was in the world:
And the world was made through him
yet the world knew him not.
he came to his own home:
and his own people received not.
but to all who received him who believed on his name:
He is given power to become children of God;
who were born not of blood
nor of the will of the flesh:
And dwelt among us full of grace and truth;
we have beheld his glory:
glory as of the only son from the father
and from his fullness have we all received:
And grace upon grace.
Amen.
9 The Prayers
Lord have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
Lord have mercy.

Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessed be God forever.

1
The glory of the Lord shall be revealed;
and all people shall see it together.
Isaiah 40.5
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of Praise
God be gracious to us and bless us: and make your face to shine upon us, That your way may be known upon earth: your salvation among all nations. Let the peoples praise you, O God: let all the peoples praise you. Let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for you judge the peoples with equity and govern the nations upon earth. Let the peoples praise you, O God: let all the peoples praise you. Then the earth will bring forth its increase: and God, our own God, will bless us. You, O God, will bless us: and all the ends of the earth will fear you.
Psalm 67
3 The Opening Prayer
The day is now past and the night is at hand.
Let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence may be kept.
Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our evening sacrifice; make us a light for all the world, delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
Amen.
4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 69.17–38
17 Hear me, O Lord, as your loving-kindness is good:
turn to me, as your compassion is great.
18 Do not hide your face from your servant:
for I am in trouble—O be swift to answer me!
19 Draw near to me and redeem me:
O ransom me because of my enemies !
20 You know all their taunts:
my adversaries are all in your sight.
21 Insults have broken my heart:
my shame and disgrace are past healing.
22 I looked for someone to have pity on me,
but there was no one:
for some to comfort me, but found none.
23 They gave me poison for food:
and when I was thirsty, they gave me vinegar to drink.
24 Let their table become a snare:
and their sacrificial feasts a trap.
25 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see:
and make their loins shake continually.
26 Pour out your wrath upon them:
and let your fierce anger overtake them.
27 Let their camp be desolate:
and let no one dwell in their tents.
28 For they persecute where you have stricken:
and multiply the pain of those whom you have wounded.
29 Let them have punishment upon punishment:
let them not receive your forgiveness.
30 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living:
let them not be written down among the righteous.]
31 As for me, I am poor and in misery:
O God, let your deliverance lift me up.
32 And I will praise the name of God in a song:
and glorify him with thanksgiving.
33 And that will please the Lord more than an ox:
more than a bull with horns and cloven hoof.
34 Consider this, you that are meek, and rejoice:
seek God, and let your heart be glad.
35 For the Lord listens to the poor:
he does not despise his servants in captivity.
36 Let the heavens and the earth praise him:
the seas and all that moves in them.
37 For God will save Zion:
he will rebuild the cities of Judah.
38 His people shall live there and possess it,
the seed of his servants shall inherit it:
and those who love his name shall dwell in it.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
God of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: graft in our hearts the love of your name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of your great mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.
1st Reading
Ecclesiastes 9.7–16
7 Go, eat your bread with enjoyment, and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God has long ago approved what you do. 8 Let your garments always be white; do not let oil be lacking on your head. 9 Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that are given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun.10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do with your might; for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going. 11 Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favour to the skilful; but time and chance happen to them all. 12 For no one can anticipate the time of disaster. Like fish taken in a cruel net, and like birds caught in a snare, so mortals are snared at a time of calamity, when it suddenly falls upon them. 13 I have also seen this example of wisdom under the sun, and it seemed important to me. 14 There was a little city with few people in it. A great king came against it and besieged it, building great siege-works against it. 15 Now there was found in it a poor, wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city. Yet no one remembered that poor man. 16 So I said, ‘Wisdom is better than might; yet the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heeded.’
2nd Reading
Revelation 12.1–6
1 A great portent appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. 2 She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pangs, in the agony of giving birth. 3 Then another portent appeared in heaven: a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. 4 His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. Then the dragon stood before the woman who was about to bear a child, so that he might devour her child as soon as it was born. 5 And she gave birth to a son, a male child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron. But her child was snatched away and taken to God and to his throne; 6 and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, so that there she can be nourished for one thousand two hundred and sixty days.
The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.
7 The Canticle, The Song of Mary (Magnificat)
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord: my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, Who has looked with favour on his lowly servant: from this day all generations will call me blessed; The Almighty has done great things for me: and holy is his name. God has mercy on those who fear him: from generation to generation. The Lord has shown strength with his arm: and scattered the proud in their conceit, Casting down the mighty from their thrones: and lifting up the lowly. God has filled the hungry with good things: and sent the rich away empty. He has come to the aid of his servant Israel: to remember the promise of mercy, The promise made to our forebears: to Abraham and his children for ever.
Luke 1.47–55
