7 The Canticle, A Song of Redemption
Christ is the image of the invisible God: the first-born of all creation. For in him all things were created: in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible. All things were created through him and for him: he is before all things and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the Church: he is the beginning, the first-born from the dead. For it pleased God that in him all fullness should dwell: and through him all things be reconciled to himself.
Colossians 1.15–20

8 The Apostles’ Creed may be said.
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

9 The Prayers
Lord have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
Lord have mercy.

10 The Lord’s Prayer and the Collect of the Day

Accept our prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord, who taught us to pray;

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.

2 The Opening Canticle, The Lord’s Servant
He was despised; he was rejected: a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. As one from whom people hide their faces: he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Ours were the sufferings he bore: ours the torments he endured, While we thought he was being punished: struck by God and brought low. He was pierced for our sins: bruised for no fault but ours. His punishment has won our peace: and by his wounds we are healed. We had all strayed like sheep: all taking our own way; But the Lord laid on him: the guilt of us all.
Isaiah 53.3–6

3 The Opening Prayer
The day is now past and the night is at hand.
Let us pray with one heart and mind.

4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 89.19-38
19 You spoke once in a vision:
and said to your faithful one,
20 ‘I have set a youth above a warrior:
I have exalted a young man out of the people.
21 ‘I have found my servant David:
and anointed him with my holy oil.
22 ‘My hand shall uphold him:
and my arm shall strengthen him.
23 ‘No enemy shall deceive him:
nor shall the wicked hurt him.
24 ‘I will crush his adversaries before him:
and strike down those that hate him.
25 ‘My faithfulness and loving-kindness shall be with him:
and through my name his head shall be lifted high.
26 ‘I will set the hand of his dominion
upon the Western Sea:
and his right hand shall stretch
to the streams of Mesopotamia.
27 ‘He will call to me “You are my Father:
my God, and the Rock of my salvation.”
28 ‘I will make him my first-born son:
and highest among the kings of the earth.
29 ‘I will ever maintain my loving-kindness toward him:
and my covenant with him shall stand firm.
30 ‘I will establish his line for ever:
and his throne like the days of heaven.
31 ‘If his children forsake my law:
and will not walk in my judgements;
32 ‘If they profane my statutes:
and do not keep my commandments,
33 ‘Then I will punish their rebellion with the rod:
and their iniquity with blows.
34 ‘But I will not cause my loving-kindness
to cease from him:
nor will I betray my faithfulness.
35 ‘I will not profane my covenant:
or alter what has passed from my lips.
36 ‘Once and for all I have sworn by my holiness:
I will not prove false to David.
37 ‘His posterity shall endure for ever:
and his throne be as the sun before me;
38 ‘Like the moon that is established for ever:
and stands in the heavens for evermore.’

5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
Holy Spirit, sanctifier, cleanse us from all hypocrisy, unite us to one another in the bonds of peace and love, and confirm us in holiness, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

The 1st Reading is from the book of
Isaiah 5.1–17
1 Let me sing for my beloved     my love-song concerning his vineyard:My beloved had a vineyard     on a very fertile hill. 2 He dug it and cleared it of stones,     and planted it with choice vines;he built a watch-tower in the midst of it,     and hewed out a wine vat in it;he expected it to yield grapes,     but it yielded wild grapes. 3 And now, inhabitants of Jerusalem     and people of Judah,judge between me     and my vineyard. 4 What more was there to do for my vineyard     that I have not done in it?When I expected it to yield grapes,     why did it yield wild grapes? 5 And now I will tell you     what I will do to my vineyard.I will remove its hedge,     and it shall be devoured;I will break down its wall,     and it shall be trampled down. 6 I will make it a waste;     it shall not be pruned or hoed,     and it shall be overgrown with briers and thorns;I will also command the clouds     that they rain no rain upon it. 7 For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts     is the house of Israel,and the people of Judah     are his pleasant planting;he expected justice,     but saw bloodshed;righteousness,     but heard a cry! 8 Ah, you who join house to house,     who add field to field,until there is room for no one but you,     and you are left to live alone     in the midst of the land! 9 The Lord of hosts has sworn in my hearing:Surely many houses shall be desolate,     large and beautiful houses, without inhabitant. 10 For ten acres of vineyard shall yield but one bath,     and a homer of seed shall yield a mere ephah. 11 Ah, you who rise early in the morning     in pursuit of strong drink,who linger in the evening     to be inflamed by wine, 12 whose feasts consist of lyre and harp,     tambourine and flute and wine,but who do not regard the deeds of the Lord ,     or see the work of his hands! 13 Therefore my people go into exile without knowledge;their nobles are dying of hunger,     and their multitude is parched with thirst. 14 Therefore Sheol has enlarged its appetite     and opened its mouth beyond measure;the nobility of Jerusalem and her multitude go down,     her throng and all who exult in her. 15 People are bowed down, everyone is brought low,     and the eyes of the haughty are humbled. 16 But the Lord of hosts is exalted by justice,     and the Holy God shows himself holy by righteousness. 17 Then the lambs shall graze as in their pasture,     fatlings and kids shall feed among the ruins.
2nd Reading
Mark 6.1–13
1 He left that place and came to his home town, and his disciples followed him. 2 On the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, ‘Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! 3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?’ And they took offence at him. 4 Then Jesus said to them, ‘Prophets are not without honour, except in their home town, and among their own kin, and in their own house.’ 5 And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. 6 And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then he went about among the villages teaching. 7 He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8 He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; 9 but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. 10 He said to them, ‘Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. 11 If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.’ 12 So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. 13 They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

7 The Canticle, A Song to the Lamb
You are worthy, our Lord and God: to receive glory and honour and power. For you have created all things: and by your will they have their being. You are worthy, O Lamb, for you were slain: and by your blood you ransomed for God saints from every tribe and language and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests serving our God: and they will reign with you on earth. To the One who sits on the throne and to the Lamb: be blessing and honour and glory and might, for ever and ever. Amen.
Revelation 4.11; 5.9b–10

Hebrews 13.15

Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.

2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of God’s Grace
We have complete freedom: to go into the most holy place by means of the death of Jesus. He opened for us a new way, a living way: through the curtain, through his own body. Since we have a great high priest set over the household of God: let us draw near with a sincere heart and a sure faith, With hearts that have been made clean from a guilty conscience: and bodies washed with pure water.
Hebrews 10.19–22

3 The Opening Prayer
The night has passed and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence may be kept.

4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 89.1-18
1 Lord, I will sing for ever of your loving-kindnesses:
my mouth shall proclaim your faithfulness
throughout all generations.
2 I have said of your loving-kindness
that it is built for ever:
you have established your faithfulness in the heavens.
3 The Lord said ‘I have made a covenant with my chosen:
I have sworn an oath to my servant David.
4 ‘I will establish your line for ever:
and build up your throne for all generations.’
5 Let the heavens praise your wonders, O Lord:
and let your faithfulness be sung
in the assembly of the holy ones.
6 For who amidst the clouds can be compared to the Lord:
or who is like the Lord amongst the gods?
7 —A God to be feared in the council of the holy ones:
great and terrible above all that are around him.
8 O Lord God of hosts, who is like you?:
your power and your faithfulness are all about you.
9 You rule the raging of the sea:
when its waves surge, you still them.
10 You crushed Rahab like a carcase:
you scattered your enemies by your mighty arm.
11 The heavens are yours, so also is the earth:
you founded the world and all that is in it.
12 You created the north and the south:
Tabor and Mount Hermon shall sing of your name.
13 Mighty is your arm:
strong is your hand,
and your right hand is lifted high.
14 Righteousness and justice
are the foundation of your throne:
loving-kindness and faithfulness attend your presence.
15 Happy the people who know the triumphal shout:
who walk, O Lord, in the light of your countenance.
16 They rejoice all the day long because of your name:
because of your righteousness they are exalted.
17 For you are their glory and their strength:
and our heads are uplifted by your favour.
18 Our king belongs to the Lord:
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
Holy God, through your beloved Son you reconciled all things to yourself, making peace by the blood of his cross: fill us and those for whom we pray with your peace and joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

1st Reading
Isaiah 42.1–17
1 Here is my servant, whom I uphold,      my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him;      he will bring forth justice to the nations. 2 He will not cry or lift up his voice,     or make it heard in the street; 3 a bruised reed he will not break,     and a dimly burning wick he will not quench;     he will faithfully bring forth justice. 4 He will not grow faint or be crushed     until he has established justice in the earth;     and the coastlands wait for his teaching. 5 Thus says God, the Lord ,     who created the heavens and stretched them out,     who spread out the earth and what comes from it,who gives breath to the people upon it     and spirit to those who walk in it: 6 I am the Lord , I have called you in righteousness,     I have taken you by the hand and kept you;I have given you as a covenant to the people,     a light to the nations, 7 to open the eyes that are blind,to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon,     from the prison those who sit in darkness. 8 I am the Lord , that is my name;     my glory I give to no other,     nor my praise to idols. 9 See, the former things have come to pass,     and new things I now declare;before they spring forth,     I tell you of them. 10 Sing to the Lord a new song,     his praise from the end of the earth!Let the sea roar and all that fills it,     the coastlands and their inhabitants. 11 Let the desert and its towns lift up their voice,     the villages that Kedar inhabits;let the inhabitants of Sela sing for joy,     let them shout from the tops of the mountains. 12 Let them give glory to the Lord ,     and declare his praise in the coastlands. 13 The Lord goes forth like a soldier,     like a warrior he stirs up his fury;he cries out, he shouts aloud,     he shows himself mighty against his foes. 14 For a long time I have held my peace,     I have kept still and restrained myself;now I will cry out like a woman in labour,     I will gasp and pant. 15 I will lay waste mountains and hills,     and dry up all their herbage;I will turn the rivers into islands,     and dry up the pools. 16 I will lead the blind     by a road they do not know,by paths they have not known     I will guide them.I will turn the darkness before them into light,     the rough places into level ground.These are the things I will do,     and I will not forsake them. 17 They shall be turned back and utterly put to shame—     those who trust in carved images,who say to cast images,     ‘You are our gods.’
2nd Reading
1 Thessalonians 4.1–12
1 Finally, brothers and sisters, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus that, as you learned from us how you ought to live and to please God (as, in fact, you are doing), you should do so more and more. 2 For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. 3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from fornication; 4 that each one of you knows how to control your own body in holiness and honour, 5 not with lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God; 6 that no one wrongs or exploits a brother or sister in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, just as we have already told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. 7 For God did not call us to impurity but in holiness. 8 Therefore whoever rejects this rejects not human authority but God, who also gives his Holy Spirit to you. 9 Now concerning love of the brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anyone write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another; 10 and indeed you do love all the brothers and sisters throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, beloved, to do so more and more, 11 to aspire to live quietly, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we directed you, 12 so that you may behave properly towards outsiders and be dependent on no one.

The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

7 The Canticle, Saviour of the World
Jesus, Saviour of the world, come to us in your mercy: we look to you to save and help us. By your cross and your life laid down, you set your people free: we look to you to save and help us. When they were ready to perish, you saved your disciples: we look to you to come to our help. In the greatness of your mercy, loose us from our chains: forgive the sins of all your people. Make yourself known as our saviour and mighty deliverer: save and help us that we may praise you. Come now and dwell with us, Lord Christ Jesus: hear our prayer and be with us always. And when you come in your glory: make us to be one with you
and to share the life of your kingdom.

Amen.

2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of Joy
Be joyful in the Lord, all the earth: serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with singing. Know that the Lord is God: it is he who has made us, and we are his; for we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise: give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good; his loving-kindness is everlasting: and his faithfulness endures from age to age.
Psalm 100

4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 119.89–104
89 Lord, your word is for ever:
it stands firm in the heavens.
90 Your faithfulness abides from one generation to another:
firm as the earth which you have made.
91 As for your judgements, they stand fast this day:
for all things are your servants.
92 If your law had not been my delight:
I would have perished in my affliction.
93 I will never forget your precepts:
for by them you have given me life.
94 I am yours, O save me:
for I have sought your precepts.
95 The wicked have lain in wait for me to destroy me:
but I think on your commands.
96 I have seen that all perfection comes to an end:
only your commandment has no bounds.
97 Lord, how I love your law:
it is my meditation all the day long.
98 Your commandments have made me
wiser than my enemies:
for they remain with me for ever.
99 I have more understanding than all my teachers:
for I study your commands.
100 I am wiser than the aged:
because I have kept your precepts.
101 I have held back my feet from every evil path:
that I might keep your word;
102 I have not turned aside from your judgements:
for you yourself are my teacher.
103 How sweet are your words to my tongue:
sweeter than honey to my mouth.
104 Through your precepts I get understanding:
therefore I hate all lying ways.

5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
God our saviour, you sent Jesus into the world of sin, and delivered him up to death for us: kindle in our hearts the same love with which he loved his own to the end; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.
1st Reading
Isaiah 3.13–4.6
13 The Lord rises to argue his case;     he stands to judge the peoples. 14 The Lord enters into judgement     with the elders and princes of his people:It is you who have devoured the vineyard;     the spoil of the poor is in your houses. 15 What do you mean by crushing my people,     by grinding the face of the poor? says the Lord God of hosts. 16 The Lord said:Because the daughters of Zion are haughty     and walk with outstretched necks,     glancing wantonly with their eyes,mincing along as they go,     tinkling with their feet; 17 the Lord will afflict with scabs     the heads of the daughters of Zion,     and the Lord will lay bare their secret parts. 18 On that day the Lord will take away the finery of the anklets, the headbands, and the crescents; 19 the pendants, the bracelets, and the scarves; 20 the head-dresses, the armlets, the sashes, the perfume boxes, and the amulets; 21 the signet rings and nose-rings; 22 the festal robes, the mantles, the cloaks, and the handbags; 23 the garments of gauze, the linen garments, the turbans, and the veils. 24 Instead of perfume there will be a stench;     and instead of a sash, a rope;and instead of well-arranged hair, baldness;     and instead of a rich robe, a binding of sackcloth;     instead of beauty, shame. 25 Your men shall fall by the sword     and your warriors in battle. 26 And her gates shall lament and mourn;     ravaged, she shall sit upon the ground. 1 Seven women shall take hold of one man on that day, saying,‘We will eat our own bread and wear our own clothes;just let us be called by your name;     take away our disgrace.’ 2 On that day the branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land shall be the pride and glory of the survivors of Israel. 3 Whoever is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy, everyone who has been recorded for life in Jerusalem, 4 once the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains of Jerusalem from its midst by a spirit of judgement and by a spirit of burning. 5 Then the Lord will create over the whole site of Mount Zion and over its places of assembly a cloud by day and smoke and the shining of a flaming fire by night. Indeed, over all the glory there will be a canopy. 6 It will serve as a pavilion, a shade by day from the heat, and a refuge and a shelter from the storm and rain.
2nd Reading
Mark 5.21–43
21 When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered round him; and he was by the lake. 22 Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet 23 and begged him repeatedly, ‘My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live.’ 24 So he went with him. And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. 25 Now there was a woman who had been suffering from haemorrhages for twelve years. 26 She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 for she said, ‘If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well.’ 29 Immediately her haemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. 30 Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, ‘Who touched my clothes?’ 31 And his disciples said to him, ‘You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, “Who touched me?” ’ 32 He looked all round to see who had done it. 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.’ 35 While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader’s house to say, ‘Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?’ 36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, ‘Do not fear, only believe.’ 37 He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.38 When they came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 When he had entered, he said to them, ‘Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping.’ 40 And they laughed at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41 He took her by the hand and said to her, ‘Talitha cum’, which means, ‘Little girl, get up!’ 42 And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were overcome with amazement. 43 He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

A 2-minute Gospel reflection by Felicity Scott.

Well how great was Jesus’ presence, so great that his witnesses recorded that just by touching his clothes, people were healed. Although there were many people surrounding and touching Jesus on this occasion, this woman’s touch was different. Everyone else was attempting to get Jesus’ attention, this woman, used faith in Jesus’ abilities to heal herself and through that faith, her intention was merely to touch his clothes, this was a testament of her faith in a man only heard of and had not yet met. Jesus’ reputation preceded him, the knowledge of his ability to heal the sick and perform miracles was so well known that this woman had moved her faith to absolution, absolution that merely touching the clothes worn by Jesus’ was enough to be healed; and the woman was right her absolution in Jesus’ abilities paid off. She was healed.

Absolution of faith, what is this, absolution can interpret to many things, freedom, pardon, forgiveness, liberty. In this circumstance, whatever the cause of the woman’s disease, she was absolved of the cause by touching Jesus’ clothes. Such was her faith, the cause was absolved, and she was healed, her absolution was that she was freed from all sin and any disease that had developed from it.

Absolution of faith, to have absolute belief in a certain outcome. Absolute belief that our sins are forgiven in the name of Jesus’ Christ and that forgiveness heals all disease. Amen

7 The Canticle,
Christ Jesus was in the form of God:
But he did not cling to equality with God.
He emptied himself, taking the form of a servant:
And was born in our human likeness.
Being found in human form, he humbled himself:
And became obedient unto death,
Even death on a cross.
Therefore, God has highly exalted him:
And bestowed on him the name above every name,
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow:
In heaven and on earth and under the earth;
And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord:
to the glory of God the father.
Philippians 2.5b–11

Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessed be God forever.
Let us Pray.

1
This is the message we have heard from Christ:
That God is light, in whom there is no darkness at all.

Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.

2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of God’s Grace
Go up to a high mountain
Herald of good tidings to Zion:
Lift up your voice with strength,
Herald of good tidings to Jerusalem.
Lift up your voice, fear not:
Say to the cities of Judah, ‘Behold your God!’
See the Lord God coming with power:
Coming to rule with his mighty arm.
He brings his reward for the people of God:
the recompense for those who are saved.
God will feed his flock like a shepherd:
And gather the lambs in his arms;
He will hold them to his breast:
And gently lead those that are with young.
Isaiah 40.9-11

3 The Opening Prayer
The night has now passed and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence may be kept.
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever.
Amen.

4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 90.

5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
Almighty God, who wonderfully created us in your own image and yet more wonderfully restored us in your son Jesus Christ: grant that as he came to share our human nature so we may be partakers in his divine glory; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit caught, one God now and forever.
Amen.

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

1st Reading is from Isaiah 41. 17-29.

17When the poor and needy seek water,
and there is none,
and their tongue is parched with thirst,
I the Lord will answer them,
I the God of Israel will not forsake them.
18I will open rivers on the bare heights,
and fountains in the midst of the valleys;
I will make the wilderness a pool of water,
and the dry land springs of water.
19I will put in the wilderness the cedar,
the acacia, the myrtle, and the olive;
I will set in the desert the cypress,
the plane and the pine together,
20so that all may see and know,
all may consider and understand,
that the hand of the Lord has done this,
the Holy One of Israel has created it.
21Set forth your case, says the Lord;
bring your proofs, says the King of Jacob.
22Let them bring them, and tell us
what is to happen.
Tell us the former things, what they are,
so that we may consider them,
and that we may know their outcome;
or declare to us the things to come.
23Tell us what is to come hereafter,
that we may know that you are gods;
do good, or do harm,
that we may be afraid and terrified.
24You, indeed, are nothing
and your work is nothing at all;
whoever chooses you is an abomination.
25I stirred up one from the north, and he has come,
from the rising of the sun he was summoned by name.
He shall trample on rulers as on mortar,
as the potter treads clay.
26Who declared it from the beginning, so that we might know,
and beforehand, so that we might say, “He is right”?
There was no one who declared it, none who proclaimed,
none who heard your words.
27I first have declared it to Zion,
and I give to Jerusalem a herald of good tidings.
28But when I look there is no one;
among these there is no counselor
who, when I ask, gives an answer.
29No, they are all a delusion;
their works are nothing;
their images are empty wind.

2nd Reading is from – 1 Thessalonians 3.
1Therefore when we could bear it no longer, we decided to be left alone in Athens; 2and we sent Timothy, our brother and co-worker for God in proclaiming the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you for the sake of your faith, 3so that no one would be shaken by these persecutions. Indeed, you yourselves know that this is what we are destined for. 4In fact, when we were with you, we told you beforehand that we were to suffer persecution; so it turned out, as you know. 5For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith; I was afraid that somehow the tempter had tempted you and that our labor had been in vain.
6But Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought us the good news of your faith and love. He has told us also that you always remember us kindly and long to see us—just as we long to see you. 7For this reason, brothers and sisters, during all our distress and persecution we have been encouraged about you through your faith. 8For we now live, if you continue to stand firm in the Lord. 9How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? 10Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith.
11Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. 12And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you. 13And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.
The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

7 The Canticle,
In the beginning was the word:
 and the word was with God,
 and the word was god:
 he was in the beginning with god.
 all things were made through him:
 and without him, was not anything made that was made.
In him was life:
And the life was the light of all the people.
The light shines in the darkness:
And the darkness has not overcome it.
He was in the world:
And the world was made through him
 yet the world knew him not.
 he came to his own home:
and his own people received not.
but to all who received him who believed on his name:
He has given power to become children of God;
who were born not of blood
nor of the will of the flesh:
nor of the will of a man but of God.
And the word became flesh
And dwelt among us full of grace and truth;
we have beheld his glory:
 glory as of the only son from the father
and from his fullness have we all received:
And grace upon grace.

Amen.

We proclaim the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ:
GOD in his infinite mercy, forgives all sins, and through our baptism in the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, we are given a rebirth into new life, free from the burden of all sin. ALLELUIA
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessed be God forever.
Let us Pray.

1
The glory of the Lord shall be revealed;
and all people shall see it together.
Isaiah 40.5
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.

2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of Praise
God be gracious to us and bless us: and make your face to shine upon us, That your way may be known upon earth: your salvation among all nations. Let the peoples praise you, O God: let all the peoples praise you. Let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for you judge the peoples with equity and govern the nations upon earth. Let the peoples praise you, O God: let all the peoples praise you. Then the earth will bring forth its increase: and God, our own God, will bless us. You, O God, will bless us: and all the ends of the earth will fear you.
Psalm 67

3 The Opening Prayer
The day is now past and the night is at hand.
Let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence may be kept.
Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our evening sacrifice; make us a light for all the world, delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
Amen.

4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
PSALM 88
1 O Lord my God, I call for help by day:
and by night also I cry out before you.
2 Let my prayer come into your presence:
and turn your ear to my loud crying.
3 For my soul is filled with trouble:
and my life has come even to the brink of the grave.
4 I am reckoned among those that go down to the Pit:
I am as one that has no help.
5 I lie among the dead,
like the slain that sleep in the grave:
whom you remember no more,
who are cut off from your power.
6 You have laid me in the lowest Pit:
in darkness and in the watery depths.
7 Your wrath lies heavy upon me:
and all your waves are brought against me.
8 You have put my friends far from me:
and made me to be abhorred by them.
9 I am so fast in prison I cannot get free:
my eyes fail because of my affliction.
10 Lord, I call to you every day:
I stretch out my hands toward you.
11 Will you work wonders for the dead:
or will the shades rise up again to praise you?
12 Shall your love be declared in the grave:
or your faithfulness in the place of destruction?
13 Will your wonders be made known in the dark:
or your righteousness in the land
where all things are forgotten?
14 But to you, Lord, will I cry:
early in the morning my prayer shall come before you.
15 O Lord, why have you rejected me:
why do you hide your face from me?
16 I have been afflicted and wearied from my youth upward:
I am tossed high and low, I cease to be.
17 Your fierce anger has overwhelmed me:
and your terrors have put me to silence.
18 They surround me like a flood all the day long:
they close upon me from every side.
19 Friend and acquaintance you have put far from me:
and kept my companions from my sight.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
God of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: graft in our hearts the love of your name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of your great mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

1st Reading
Isaiah 2.19–3.12
19 Enter the caves of the rocks     and the holes of the ground,from the terror of the Lord ,     and from the glory of his majesty,     when he rises to terrify the earth. 20 On that day people will throw away     to the moles and to the batstheir idols of silver and their idols of gold,     which they made for themselves to worship, 21 to enter the caverns of the rocks     and the clefts in the crags,from the terror of the Lord ,     and from the glory of his majesty,     when he rises to terrify the earth. 22 Turn away from mortals,     who have only breath in their nostrils,     for of what account are they? 1 For now the Sovereign, the Lord of hosts,     is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judahsupport and staff—     all support of bread,     and all support of water— 2 warrior and soldier,     judge and prophet,     diviner and elder, 3 captain of fifty     and dignitary,counsellor and skilful magician     and expert enchanter. 4 And I will make boys their princes,     and babes shall rule over them. 5 The people will be oppressed,     everyone by another     and everyone by a neighbour;the youth will be insolent to the elder,     and the base to the honourable. 6 Someone will even seize a relative,     a member of the clan, saying,‘You have a cloak;     you shall be our leader,and this heap of ruins     shall be under your rule.’ 7 But the other will cry out on that day, saying,‘I will not be a healer;     in my house there is neither bread nor cloak;you shall not make me     leader of the people.’ 8 For Jerusalem has stumbled     and Judah has fallen,because their speech and their deeds are against the Lord ,     defying his glorious presence. 9 The look on their faces bears witness against them;     they proclaim their sin like Sodom,     they do not hide it.Woe to them!     For they have brought evil on themselves. 10 Tell the innocent how fortunate they are,     for they shall eat the fruit of their labours. 11 Woe to the guilty! How unfortunate they are,     for what their hands have done shall be done to them. 12 My people—children are their oppressors,     and women rule over them.O my people, your leaders mislead you,     and confuse the course of your paths.
2nd Reading
Mark 5.1–20
1 They came to the other side of the lake, to the country of the Gerasenes. 2 And when he had stepped out of the boat, immediately a man out of the tombs with an unclean spirit met him. 3 He lived among the tombs; and no one could restrain him any more, even with a chain; 4 for he had often been restrained with shackles and chains, but the chains he wrenched apart, and the shackles he broke in pieces; and no one had the strength to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always howling and bruising himself with stones. 6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and bowed down before him; 7 and he shouted at the top of his voice, ‘What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.’ 8 For he had said to him, ‘Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!’ 9 Then Jesus asked him, ‘What is your name?’ He replied, ‘My name is Legion; for we are many.’ 10 He begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country.11 Now there on the hillside a great herd of swine was feeding; 12 and the unclean spirits begged him, ‘Send us into the swine; let us enter them.’ 13 So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the swine; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the lake, and were drowned in the lake. 14 The swineherds ran off and told it in the city and in the country. Then people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 They came to Jesus and saw the demoniac sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the legion; and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen what had happened to the demoniac and to the swine reported it. 17 Then they began to beg Jesus to leave their neighbourhood. 18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by demons begged him that he might be with him. 19 But Jesus refused, and said to him, ‘Go home to your friends, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy he has shown you.’ 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed.

The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

7 The Canticle, The Song of Mary (Magnificat)
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord: my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, Who has looked with favour on his lowly servant: from this day all generations will call me blessed; The Almighty has done great things for me: and holy is his name. God has mercy on those who fear him: from generation to generation. The Lord has shown strength with his arm: and scattered the proud in their conceit, Casting down the mighty from their thrones: and lifting up the lowly. God has filled the hungry with good things: and sent the rich away empty. He has come to the aid of his servant Israel: to remember the promise of mercy, The promise made to our forebears: to Abraham and his children for ever.
Luke 1.47–55

8 The Prayers
Lord have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
Lord have mercy.

9 The Lord’s Prayer and the Collect of the Day
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.

Welcome to Wednesday Morning prayer from the Anglican ‘A prayer book for Australia’.

1
Rejoice always pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks;
For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus.

Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.

2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of God’s Grace
Blessed are you the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ:
For you have blessed us in Christ Jesus
with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
You chose us to be yours in Christ,
before the foundation of the world:
That we should be holy and blameless before you.
In love you destined us to be your children,
through Jesus Christ:
according to the purpose of your will,
to the praise of your glorious grace:
which you freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.
Ephesians 1.3-6

3 The Opening Prayer
The night has now passed and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence may be kept.
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever.
Amen.

4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 86.

5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
We consecrate this day to your service, O Lord; may all our thoughts, words, and actions be well-pleasing to you and serve the good of our brothers and sisters; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

The 1st Reading is from Isaiah beginning at chapter 41. Verse 1-16
1Listen to me in silence, O coastlands;
let the peoples renew their strength;
let them approach, then let them speak;
let us together draw near for judgment.
2Who has roused a victor from the east,
summoned him to his service?
He delivers up nations to him,
and tramples kings under foot;
he makes them like dust with his sword,
like driven stubble with his bow.
3He pursues them and passes on safely,
scarcely touching the path with his feet.
4Who has performed and done this,
calling the generations from the beginning?
I, the Lord, am first,
and will be with the last.
5The coastlands have seen and are afraid,
the ends of the earth tremble;
they have drawn near and come.
6Each one helps the other,
saying to one another, “Take courage!”
7The artisan encourages the goldsmith,
and the one who smooths with the hammer encourages the one who strikes the anvil, saying of the soldering, “It is good”;
and they fasten it with nails so that it cannot be moved.
8But you, Israel, my servant,
Jacob, whom I have chosen,
the offspring of Abraham, my friend;
9you whom I took from the ends of the earth,
and called from its farthest corners,
saying to you, “You are my servant,
I have chosen you and not cast you off!”;
10do not fear, for I am with you,
do not be afraid, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.
11Yes, all who are incensed against you
shall be ashamed and disgraced;
those who strive against you
shall be as nothing and shall perish.
12You shall seek those who contend with you,
but you shall not find them;
those who war against you
shall be as nothing at all.
13For I, the Lord your God,
hold your right hand;
it is I who say to you, “Do not fear,
I will help you.”
14Do not fear, you worm Jacob,
you insect Israel!
I will help you, says the Lord;
your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.
15Now, I will make of you a threshing sledge,
sharp, new, and having teeth;
you shall thresh the mountains and crush them,
and you shall make the hills like chaff.
16You shall winnow them and the wind shall carry them away,
and the tempest shall scatter them.
Then you shall rejoice in the Lord;
in the Holy One of Israel you shall glory.

2nd Reading is from 1 Thessalonians 2. 13-20.
13We also constantly give thanks to God for this,
that when you received the word of God that you heard from us,
you accepted it not as a human word but as what it really is,
God's word, which is also at work in you believers.
14For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators of the churches of God
 in Christ Jesus that are in Judea,
for you suffered the same things from your own compatriots
 as they did from the Jews,
15who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out; they displease God and oppose everyone
16by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. Thus they have constantly been filling up the measure of their sins; but God's wrath has overtaken them at last.
17As for us, brothers and sisters, when, for a short time, we were made orphans by being separated from you—in person, not in heart—we longed with great eagerness to see you face to face.
18For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, wanted to again and again—but Satan blocked our way.
19For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you? 20Yes, you are our glory and joy!

7 The Canticle,
We praise you O God we claim you as Lord.
All creation worships you the father everlasting.
To you all angels all the powers of heaven the cherubim
and Serafim sing in endless praise.
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of power and might.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
The glorious company of apostles praise you:
 the noble fellowship of prophets praise you:
 the white robed army of martyrs praise you;
throughout the world the holy church acclaims you;
father of majesty unbounded.
Your true and only son, worthy of all praise,
the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.
You, Christ, are the king of glory,
The eternal son of the father.
When you took our flesh to set us free;
You humbly chose the virgin's womb.
You overcame the sting of death;
And opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
You are seated at the God's right hand in glory;
We believe that you will come to be our judge.
Come then, Lord, and help your people,
bought with the price of your own blood;
And bring us with your Saints to glory everlasting.

Christ have mercy.

Amen.

Collect of a bishop:
O God, our heavenly father,
Who raised up your faithful servant Nicholas of Myra;
To be a bishop in your church
And to feed your flock:
Give abundantly to all bishops and other pastors
The gifts of your Holy Spirit,
So that they may minister in your household
As true servants of Christ
And stewards of your Holy mysteries;

Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
One God for ever and ever. Amen

2 The Opening Canticle, The Song of the Three
Blessed are you, the God of our forebears:
worthy to be praised and exalted for ever. Blessed is your holy and glorious name: worthy to be praised and exalted for ever. Blessed are you, glorious in your holy temple: worthy to be praised and exalted for ever. Blessed are you who behold the depths: worthy to be praised and exalted for ever. Blessed are you on the throne of your kingdom: worthy to be praised and exalted for ever. Blessed are you in the heights of heaven: worthy to be praised and exalted for ever.

3 The Opening Prayer
The day is now past and the night is at hand. Let us pray with one heart and mind.

4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 85; 87
85
1 O Lord, you were gracious to your land:
you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
2 You forgave the iniquity of your people:
and covered all their sin.
3 You put aside all your wrath:
and turned away from your fierce indignation.
4 Return to us again, O God our saviour:
and let your anger cease from us.
5 Will you be displeased with us for ever:
will you stretch out your wrath
from one generation to another?
6 Will you not give us life again:
that your people may rejoice in you?
7 Show us your mercy, O Lord:
and grant us your salvation.
8 I will hear what the Lord God will speak:
for he will speak peace to his people,
to his faithful ones, whose hearts are turned to him.
9 Truly his salvation is near to those that fear him:
and his glory shall dwell in our land.
10 Mercy and truth are met together:
righteousness and peace have kissed each other;
11 Truth shall flourish out of the earth:
and righteousness shall look down from heaven.
12 The Lord will also give us all that is good:
and our land shall yield its plenty.
13 For righteousness shall go before him:
and tread the path before his feet.
87
1 He has founded it upon a holy hill:
and the Lord loves the gates of Zion
more than all the dwellings of Jacob.
2 Glorious things shall be spoken of you:
O Zion, city of our God.
3 I might speak of my kindred in Egypt or in Babylon:
in Philistia, Tyre or Nubia, where each was born.
4 But of Zion it shall be said:
many were born in her,
he that is Most High has established her.
5 When the Lord draws up the record of the nations:
he shall take note where everyone was born.
6 And the singers and the dancers together:
shall make their song to your name.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
God of grace, we thank you for all your gifts to us:
grant us to accept both pain and joy in faith and hope,
and never to fail in love to you
 and to our sisters and brothers;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
Amen.
6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

1st Reading
Isaiah 2.6–18
6 For you have forsaken the ways of your people,     O house of Jacob.Indeed they are full of diviners from the east     and of soothsayers like the Philistines,     and they clasp hands with foreigners. 7 Their land is filled with silver and gold,     and there is no end to their treasures;their land is filled with horses,     and there is no end to their chariots. 8 Their land is filled with idols;     they bow down to the work of their hands,     to what their own fingers have made. 9 And so people are humbled,     and everyone is brought low—     do not forgive them! 10 Enter into the rock,     and hide in the dustfrom the terror of the Lord ,     and from the glory of his majesty. 11 The haughty eyes of people shall be brought low,     and the pride of everyone shall be humbled;and the Lord alone will be exalted on that day. 12 For the Lord of hosts has a day     against all that is proud and lofty,     against all that is lifted up and high; 13 against all the cedars of Lebanon,     lofty and lifted up;     and against all the oaks of Bashan; 14 against all the high mountains,     and against all the lofty hills; 15 against every high tower,     and against every fortified wall; 16 against all the ships of Tarshish,     and against all the beautiful craft. 17 The haughtiness of people shall be humbled,     and the pride of everyone shall be brought low;     and the Lord alone will be exalted on that day. 18 The idols shall utterly pass away.
2nd Reading
Mark 4.21–41
21 He said to them, ‘Is a lamp brought in to be put under the bushel basket, or under the bed, and not on the lampstand? 22 For there is nothing hidden, except to be disclosed; nor is anything secret, except to come to light. 23 Let anyone with ears to hear listen!’ 24 And he said to them, ‘Pay attention to what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. 25 For to those who have, more will be given; and from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.’ 26 He also said, ‘The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, 27 and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. 28 The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.’ 30 He also said, ‘With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.’ 33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; 34 he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples. 35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, ‘Let us go across to the other side.’ 36 And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him.37 A great gale arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, ‘Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?’ 39 He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. 40 He said to them, ‘Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?’ 41 And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, ‘Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?’
The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or

Let us Pray..

1
We will proclaim the name of the Lord
Ascribe greatness to our God

Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.

2 The Opening Canticle,
God who is rich in mercy
out of the great love with which he loved us,
even when we were dead through our trespasses
made us alive together with Christ,
and raised us up with him:
and made us sit with him
in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus
that he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace:
 in kindness towards us in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 2.4-7

3 The Opening Prayer
The night has passed and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence may be kept.
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever.
Amen.

4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 82; 84
82
1 God has stood up in the council of heaven:
in the midst of the gods he gives judgement.
2 ‘How long will you judge unjustly:
and favour the cause of the wicked?
3 ‘Judge for the poor and fatherless:
vindicate the afflicted and oppressed.
4 ‘Rescue the poor and needy:
and save them from the hands of the wicked.
5 ‘They do not know, they do not understand,
they walk about in darkness:
all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
6 ‘Therefore I say, “Though you are gods:
and all of you children of the Most High,
7 ‘“Nevertheless you shall die like a mortal:
and fall like one of the princes.”’
8 Arise, O God, and judge the earth:
for you shall take all nations as your possession.
84
1 How lovely is your dwelling-place:
O Lord God of hosts!
2 My soul has a desire and longing
to enter the courts of the Lord:
my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.
3 The sparrow has found her a home,
and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young:
even your altar, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.
4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house:
they will always be praising you.
5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you:
in whose heart are the highways to Zion;
6 Who, going through the valley of dryness,
find there a spring from which to drink:
till the autumn rain shall clothe it with blessings.
7 They go from strength to strength:
they appear, every one of them,
before the God of gods in Zion.
8 O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer:
give ear, O God of Jacob.
9 Behold, O God, him who reigns over us:
and look upon the face of your anointed.
10 One day in your courts is better than a thousand:
I would rather stand at the threshold
of the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of ungodliness.
11 For the Lord God is a light and a shield,
the Lord gives favour and honour:
and no good thing will he withhold
from those who walk in innocence.
12 O Lord God of hosts:
blessed are those who put their trust in you.

5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow;
Lord our God, our Creator, redeemer, and sanctifier:
we ask you to cleanse us from all hypocrisy,
to unite us to our fellow men and women
by the bonds of peace and love
and to confirm us in holiness; now and for ever.
Amen.

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

1st Reading
Isaiah 40.18–31
18 To whom then will you liken God,     or what likeness compare with him? 19 An idol? —A workman casts it,     and a goldsmith overlays it with gold,     and casts for it silver chains. 20 As a gift one chooses mulberry wood     —wood that will not rot—then seeks out a skilled artisan     to set up an image that will not topple. 21 Have you not known? Have you not heard?     Has it not been told you from the beginning?     Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? 22 It is he who sits above the circle of the earth,     and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers;who stretches out the heavens like a curtain,     and spreads them like a tent to live in; 23 who brings princes to naught,     and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. 24 Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown,     scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth,when he blows upon them, and they wither,     and the tempest carries them off like stubble. 25 To whom then will you compare me,     or who is my equal? says the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes on high and see:     Who created these?He who brings out their host and numbers them,     calling them all by name;because he is great in strength,     mighty in power,     not one is missing. 27 Why do you say, O Jacob,     and speak, O Israel,‘My way is hidden from the Lord ,     and my right is disregarded by my God’? 28 Have you not known? Have you not heard?The Lord is the everlasting God,     the Creator of the ends of the earth.He does not faint or grow weary;     his understanding is unsearchable. 29 He gives power to the faint,     and strengthens the powerless. 30 Even youths will faint and be weary,     and the young will fall exhausted; 31 but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,     they shall mount up with wings like eagles,they shall run and not be weary,     they shall walk and not faint.
2nd Reading
1 Thessalonians 2.1–12
1 You yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our coming to you was not in vain, 2 but though we had already suffered and been shamefully maltreated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. 3 For our appeal does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, 4 but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. 5 As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; 6 nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, 7 though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse tenderly caring for her own children. 8 So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us. 9 You remember our labour and toil, brothers and sisters; we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. 10 You are witnesses, and God also, how pure, upright, and blameless our conduct was towards you believers. 11 As you know, we dealt with each one of you like a father with his children, 12 urging and encouraging you and pleading that you should lead a life worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.

The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

7 The Canticle, A Song of Isaiah
Blessed are the poor in spirit:
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn:
For they shall be comforted
Blessed are the meek:
For they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for what is right:
For they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful:
For mercy shall be shown to them.
Blessed are the pure in heart:
For they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers:
For they shall be called the children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake:
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
                                                      Matt.5.3-10

Amen.

2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of Hope
The spirit of the Lord God is upon me: because the Lord has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted. The Lord has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted: to proclaim liberty for the captives, and release for those in prison, To comfort all who mourn: to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning: a garment of splendour for the heavy heart. They shall be called trees of righteousness: planted for the glory of the Lord.
Isaiah 61.1–3

4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 81
1 O sing joyfully to God our strength:
shout in triumph to the God of Jacob.
2 Make music and beat upon the drum:
sound the lute and the melodious harp.
3 Blow the ram’s horn at the new moon:
and at the full moon of our day of festival.
4 For this was a statute for Israel:
a commandment of the God of Jacob,
5 Which he laid on Joseph as a solemn charge:
when he came out of the land of Egypt.
6 I heard a voice that I had not known, saying:
‘I eased your shoulders of the burden,
and your hands were freed from the load.
7 ‘You called to me in trouble, and I rescued you:
I answered you from the secret place of my thunder,
I put you to the test at the waters of Meribah.
8 ‘Listen, my people, and I will admonish you:
O Israel, if only you would hear me.
9 ‘There shall be no strange god among you:
nor shall you bow down to an alien god.
10 ‘I am the Lord your God,
who brought you up from the land of Egypt:
open wide your mouth, and I will fill it.
11 ‘But my people would not listen to my voice:
and Israel would have none of me.
12 ‘So I left them to the stubbornness of their hearts:
to walk according to their own designs.
13 ‘If only my people would listen:
if Israel would but walk in my ways,
14 ‘I would soon put down their enemies:
and turn my hand against their adversaries.
15 ‘Those that hate the Lord would cringe before him:
and their punishment would last for ever.
16 ‘But Israel I would feed with the finest wheat:
and satisfy you with honey from the rocks.’

5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
God who wonderfully created us and even more wonderfully restored our humanity: strengthen us by your Holy Spirit to triumph over suffering and death, and grant us eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

1st Reading
Isaiah 1. 18-31
18 Come now, let us argue it out,     says the Lord:though your sins are like scarlet,     they shall be like snow;though they are red like crimson,     they shall become like wool. 19 If you are willing and obedient,     you shall eat the good of the land; 20 but if you refuse and rebel,     you shall be devoured by the sword;     for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. 21 How the faithful city     has become a whore!     She that was full of justice,righteousness lodged in her—     but now murderers! 22 Your silver has become dross,     your wine is mixed with water. 23 Your princes are rebels     and companions of thieves.Everyone loves a bribe     and runs after gifts.They do not defend the orphan,     and the widow’s cause does not come before them. 24 Therefore says the Sovereign, the Lord of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel:Ah, I will pour out my wrath on my enemies,     and avenge myself on my foes! 25 I will turn my hand against you;     I will smelt away your dross as with lye     and remove all your alloy. 26 And I will restore your judges as at the first,     and your counsellors as at the beginning.Afterwards you shall be called the city of righteousness,     the faithful city. 27 Zion shall be redeemed by justice,     and those in her who repent, by righteousness. 28 But rebels and sinners shall be destroyed together,     and those who forsake the Lord shall be consumed. 29 For you shall be ashamed of the oaks     in which you delighted;and you shall blush for the gardens     that you have chosen. 30 For you shall be like an oak     whose leaf withers,     and like a garden without water. 31 The strong shall become like tinder,     and their work like a spark;they and their work shall burn together,     with no one to quench them.
2nd Reading
Mark 4.1–20
1 Again he began to teach beside the lake. Such a very large crowd gathered around him that he got into a boat on the lake and sat there, while the whole crowd was beside the lake on the land. 2 He began to teach them many things in parables, and in his teaching, he said to them: 3 ‘Listen! A sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and it sprang up quickly, since it had no depth of soil. 6 And when the sun rose, it was scorched; and since it had no root, it withered away. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. 8 Other seed fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.’9 And he said, ‘Let anyone with ears to hear listen!’ 10 When he was alone, those who were around him along with the twelve asked him about the parables. 11 And he said to them, ‘To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside, everything comes in parables; 12 in order that“they may indeed look, but not perceive,     and may indeed listen, but not understand;so that they may not turn again and be forgiven.” ’ 13 And he said to them, ‘Do you not understand this parable? Then how will you understand all the parables? 14 The sower sows the word. 15 These are the ones on the path where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. 16 And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: when they hear the word, they immediately receive it with joy. 17 But they have no root, and endure only for a while; then, when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. 18 And others are those sown among the thorns: these are the ones who hear the word, 19 but the cares of the world, and the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things come in and choke the word, and it yields nothing. 20 And these are the ones sown on the good soil: they hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.’

The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

7 The Canticle, A Song of God’s Children
In Christ Jesus, the life-giving law of the Spirit: has set us free from the law of sin and death. All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God:  it is the Spirit that enables us to cry, ‘Abba!’ Father. The Spirit bears witness that we are God’s children: and if God’s children, then heirs of God. We are heirs of God and fellow-heirs with Christ: If we share his sufferings now we shall be glorified with him hereafter. These sufferings that we now endure: are not worth comparing with the glory that shall be revealed. For the creation waits with eager longing: for the revealing of the children of God.
Romans 8.2, 14, 15b–19
