Welcome to Sunday Morning prayer from the Anglican ‘A prayer book for Australia’.
We proclaim the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ:
GOD in his infinite mercy, forgives all sins, and through our baptism in the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, we are given a rebirth into new life, free from the burden of all sin. ALLELUIA
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessed be God forever.
Let us Pray.

1
This is the day that the Lord has made.
We will rejoice and be glad in it.
Psalm 118.24
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.

The Baptism of Our Lord (First Sunday after Epiphany)
God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; and he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. Acts 10.38

2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of Triumph (Venite)
O come, let us sing out to the Lord: let us shout in triumph to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his face with thanksgiving: and cry out to him joyfully in psalms. For the Lord is a great God: and a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth:and the peaks of the mountains are his also. The sea is his and he made it: his hands moulded dry land. Come, let us worship and bow down: and kneel before the Lord our maker. For he is the Lord our God: we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Today if only you would hear his voice: ‘Do not harden your hearts as Israel did in the wilderness; ‘When your forebears tested me: put me to proof though they had seen my works. ‘Forty years long I loathed that generation and said: “It is a people who err in their hearts, for they do not know my ways”; ‘Of whom I swore in my wrath: “They shall not enter my rest.”’
Psalm 95

3 The Opening Prayer

The night has passed and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence may be kept.

As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,
so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever.
Amen.

 Confession
A pause for self-examination, the Confession and Absolution (see note 1) may be used here.
God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy, you who truly and earnestly repent of your sins and intend to lead a new life, following God and walking in his Holy ways, draw near with faith, confident in God’s forgiveness to all who confess their sins.
We confess our sins in penitence and faith. Father we have sinned in thought word and deed, please hear our confession.
We confess to commanding our way in the world, by using the Fathers’ power to gain our wants and desires; instead of conforming to our purpose through the fathers will.
Merciful Father: we turn to you in faith, pardon us and set us free from all our sins, through Jesus Christ. Amen

4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 2
1 Why are the nations in tumult:
and why do the peoples cherish a vain dream?
2 The kings of the earth rise up
and the rulers conspire together:
against the Lord and against his anointed, saying,
3 ‘Let us break their bonds asunder:
let us throw off their chains from us.’
4 He that dwells in heaven shall laugh them to scorn:
the Lord will hold them in derision.
5 Then will he speak to them in his wrath,
and terrify them in his fury:
‘I, the Lord, have set up my king on Zion my holy hill.’
6 I will announce the Lord’s decree,
that which he has spoken:
‘You are my son, this day have I begotten you.
7 ‘Ask of me,
and I will give you the nations for your inheritance:
the uttermost parts of the earth for your possession.
8 ‘You may break them with a rod of iron:
and shatter them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.’
9 Now therefore be wise, O kings:
be advised, you that are judges of the earth.
10 Serve the Lord with awe,
and govern yourselves in fear and trembling:
lest he be angry, and you perish in your course.
11 For his wrath is quickly kindled:
blessed are those that turn to him for refuge.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
Lord God, whose blessed Son rose in triumph and set us free: grant us the fullness of life he promised us, that through the Holy Spirit our hearts may possess him whom our eyes cannot see, the same Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

1st Reading
Ezekiel 47.1-12
1 Then he brought me back to the entrance of the temple; there, water was flowing from below the threshold of the temple towards the east (for the temple faced east); and the water was flowing down from below the south end of the threshold of the temple, south of the altar. 2 Then he brought me out by way of the north gate, and led me round on the outside to the outer gate that faces towards the east; and the water was coming out on the south side. 3 Going on eastwards with a cord in his hand, the man measured one thousand cubits, and then led me through the water; and it was ankle-deep. 4 Again he measured one thousand, and led me through the water; and it was knee-deep. Again he measured one thousand, and led me through the water; and it was up to the waist. 5 Again he measured one thousand, and it was a river that I could not cross, for the water had risen; it was deep enough to swim in, a river that could not be crossed. 6 He said to me, ‘Mortal, have you seen this?’Then he led me back along the bank of the river. 7 As I came back, I saw on the bank of the river a great many trees on one side and on the other. 8 He said to me, ‘This water flows towards the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah; and when it enters the sea, the sea of stagnant waters, the water will become fresh. 9 Wherever the river goes, every living creature that swarms will live, and there will be very many fish, once these waters reach there. It will become fresh; and everything will live where the river goes. 10 People will stand fishing beside the sea from En-gedi to En-eglaim; it will be a place for the spreading of nets; its fish will be of a great many kinds, like the fish of the Great Sea. 11 But its swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they are to be left for salt. 12 On the banks, on both sides of the river, there will grow all kinds of trees for food. Their leaves will not wither nor their fruit fail, but they will bear fresh fruit every month, because the water for them flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for healing.’
2nd Reading
John 1.19-24
19 This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ 20 He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, ‘I am not the Messiah.’ 21 And they asked him, ‘What then? Are you Elijah?’ He said, ‘I am not.’ ‘Are you the prophet?’ He answered, ‘No.’ 22 Then they said to him, ‘Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?’ 23 He said,‘I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness,“Make straight the way of the Lord” ’,as the prophet Isaiah said. 24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.

The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

7 The Canticle, The Song of Zechariah (Benedictus)
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel: who has come to his people and set them free. The Lord has raised up for us a mighty Saviour: born of the house of his servant David. Through the holy prophets, God promised of old: to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us, To show mercy to our forebears: and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear: holy and righteous before him, all the days of our life. And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High: for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation: by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God: the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death: and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Luke 1.68–79

8 The Apostles’ Creed may be said.
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

9 The Prayers
Lord have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
Lord have mercy.

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

10 The Collect of the Day
The Baptism of Our Lord (First Sunday after Epiphany)
Eternal God,
at the baptism of Jesus in the river Jordan
you proclaimed him your beloved Son,
and anointed him with the Holy Spirit:
grant that all who are baptised into his name
may keep the covenant they have made,
and boldly confess him as Lord and Saviour;
who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns,
one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of the Week
The Baptism of Our Lord (First Sunday after Epiphany)
Almighty God,
who anointed Jesus at his baptism with the Holy Spirit
and revealed him as your beloved Son:
inspire us, your children,
who are born again of water and the Spirit,
to surrender our lives to your service,
that we may rejoice to be called your children;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

11 Intercessions and Thanksgivings may be made according to local custom and need.
Almighty God, by your Son Jesus Christ you gave many excellent gifts to your apostles and commanded them to feed your flock. Bless Jeremy Greaves the Archbishop and all bishops in The Anglican Church Southern Queensland. So fill them with your truth, and clothe them with holiness, that as pastors of your Church they may diligently preach your word, and rightly teach your people, to the glory of your name, and the benefit of your Church. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

God of wisdom, grant we pray that the words we have heard today make in us a desire to serve the people in bringing the good news of Christ to all who have yet to hear it, so that they may bring forth in us the fruit of good works to honour and praise your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Christ is the image of the invisible God: the first-born of all creation. For in him all things were created: in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible. All things were created through him and for him: he is before all things and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the Church: he is the beginning, the first-born from the dead. For it pleased God that in him all fullness should dwell: and through him all things be reconciled to himself.

2 The Opening Canticle, The Lord’s Servant
He was despised; he was rejected: a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. As one from whom people hide their faces: he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Ours were the sufferings he bore: ours the torments he endured, While we thought he was being punished: struck by God and brought low. He was pierced for our sins: bruised for no fault but ours. His punishment has won our peace: and by his wounds we are healed. We had all strayed like sheep: all taking our own way; But the Lord laid on him: the guilt of us all.
Isaiah 53.3–6

3 The Opening Prayer
The day is now past and the night is at hand.
Let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence may be kept.
Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our evening sacrifice; make us a light for all the world, delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
Amen.

4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 19
1 The heavens declare the glory of God:
and the firmament proclaims his handiwork;
2 One day tells it to another:
and night to night communicates knowledge.
3 There is no speech or language:
nor are their voices heard;
4 Yet their sound has gone out through all the world:
and their words to the ends of the earth.
5 There he has pitched a tent for the sun:
which comes out as a bridegroom from his chamber,
and rejoices like a strong man to run his course.
6 Its rising is at one end of the heavens,
and its circuit to their farthest bound:
and nothing is hidden from its heat.
7 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul:
the command of the Lord is true,
and makes wise the simple.
8 The precepts of the Lord are right,
and rejoice the heart:
the commandment of the Lord is pure,
and gives light to the eyes.
9 The fear of the Lord is clean, and endures for ever:
the judgements of the Lord are unchanging,
and righteous every one.
10 More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold:
sweeter also than honey,
than the honey that drips from the comb.
11 Moreover, by them is your servant taught:
and in keeping them there is great reward.
12 Who can know their own unwitting sins?:
O cleanse me from my secret faults.
13 Keep your servant also from presumptuous sins,
lest they get the mastery over me:
so I shall be clean, and innocent of great offence.
14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation
of my heart be acceptable in your sight:
O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
Holy Spirit, sanctifier, cleanse us from all hypocrisy, unite us to one another in the bonds of peace and love, and confirm us in holiness, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

1st Reading
2 Samuel 22.47-51
47 The Lord lives! Blessed be my rock,     and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation, 48 the God who gave me vengeance     and brought down peoples under me, 49 who brought me out from my enemies;     you exalted me above my adversaries,     you delivered me from the violent. 50 For this I will extol you, O Lord , among the nations,     and sing praises to your name. 51 He is a tower of salvation for his king,     and shows steadfast love to his anointed,     to David and his descendants for ever.
2nd Reading
Romans 15.8-21
8 For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised-on behalf of the truth of God in order that he might confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, 9 and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,‘Therefore I will confess you among the Gentiles,     and sing praises to your name’; 10 and again he says,‘Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people’; 11 and again,‘Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,     and let all the peoples praise him’; 12 and again Isaiah says,‘The root of Jesse shall come,     the one who rises to rule the Gentiles;in him the Gentiles shall hope.’ 13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. 14 I myself feel confident about you, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, and able to instruct one another. 15 Nevertheless, on some points I have written to you rather boldly by way of reminder, because of the grace given me by God 16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. 17 In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to boast of my work for God. 18 For I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to win obedience from the Gentiles, by word and deed, 19 by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem and as far around as Illyricum I have fully proclaimed the good news of Christ. 20 Thus I make it my ambition to proclaim the good news, not where Christ has already been named, so that I do not build on someone else’s foundation, 21 but as it is written,‘Those who have never been told of him shall see,     and those who have never heard of him shall understand.’

The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

7 The Canticle, A Song to the Lamb
You are worthy, our Lord and God: to receive glory and honour and power. For you have created all things: and by your will they have their being. You are worthy, O Lamb, for you were slain: and by your blood you ransomed for God saints from every tribe and language and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests serving our God: and they will reign with you on earth. To the One who sits on the throne and to the Lamb: be blessing and honour and glory and might, for ever and ever. Amen.
Revelation 4.11; 5.9b–10

Welcome to Friday Morning prayer from the Anglican ‘A prayer book for Australia’.
1
Through Christ let us offer up a sacrifice of praise to God,
the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.
Hebrews 13.15

Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.

2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of God’s Grace
We have complete freedom: to go into the most holy place by means of the death of Jesus. He opened for us a new way, a living way: through the curtain, through his own body. Since we have a great high priest set over the household of God: let us draw near with a sincere heart and a sure faith, With hearts that have been made clean from a guilty conscience: and bodies washed with pure water.
Hebrews 10.19–22

3 The Opening Prayer
The night has passed and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence may be kept.
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever.
Amen.

4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 15, 16

5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
Holy God, through your beloved Son you reconciled all things to yourself, making peace by the blood of his cross: fill us and those for whom we pray with your peace and joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

1st Reading
Isaiah 66.10–16
2nd Reading
Ephesians 3.14–21

The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

7 The Canticle, Saviour of the World
Jesus, Saviour of the world, come to us in your mercy: we look to you to save and help us. By your cross and your life laid down, you set your people free: we look to you to save and help us. When they were ready to perish, you saved your disciples: we look to you to come to our help. In the greatness of your mercy, loose us from our chains: forgive the sins of all your people. Make yourself known as our saviour and mighty deliverer: save and help us that we may praise you. Come now and dwell with us, Lord Christ Jesus: hear our prayer and be with us always. And when you come in your glory: make us to be one with you
and to share the life of your kingdom.

10 The Lord’s Prayer and the Collect of the Day
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.

The Lord our God the Almighty reigns.
Let us rejoice and exult and give God the glory.
Revelation 19.6–7

Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen

2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of Joy
Be joyful in the Lord, all the earth: serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with singing. Know that the Lord is God: it is he who has made us, and we are his; for we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise: give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good; his loving-kindness is everlasting: and his faithfulness endures from age to age.
Psalm 100

3 The Opening Prayer
The day is now past and the night is at hand.
Let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence may be kept.
Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our evening sacrifice; make us a light for all the world, delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
Amen.

4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 13; 14
13
1 How long, O Lord, will you so utterly forget me:
how long will you hide your face from me?
2 How long must I suffer anguish in my soul,
and be so grieved in my heart day and night:
how long shall my enemy triumph over me?
3 Look upon me, O Lord my God, and answer me:
lighten my eyes, lest I sleep in death;
4 Lest my enemy say ‘I have prevailed’:
lest my foes exult at my overthrow.
5 Yet I put my trust in your unfailing love:
O let my heart rejoice in your salvation.
6 And I will make my song to the Lord:
because he deals so bountifully with me.
14
1 Fools have said in their hearts ‘There is no God’:
they have all become vile and abominable in their doings,
there is not one that does good.
2 The Lord looked down from heaven
upon the children of Adam:
to see if there were any who would act wisely
and seek after God.
3 But they have all turned out of the way,
they have all alike become corrupt:
there is none that does good, no not one.
4 Are all the evildoers devoid of understanding:
who eat up my people as they eat bread,
and do not pray to the Lord?
5 They shall be struck with terror:
for God is with the company of the righteous.
6 Though they frustrate the poor in their hopes:
surely the Lord is their refuge.
7 O that deliverance for Israel might come forth
from Zion:
when the Lord turns again the fortunes of his people,
then shall Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad.

5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
God our saviour, you sent Jesus into the world of sin, and delivered him up to death for us: kindle in our hearts the same love with which he loved his own to the end; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.
1st Reading
Isaiah 33.5-24
5 The Lord is exalted, he dwells on high;     he filled Zion with justice and righteousness; 6 he will be the stability of your times,     abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge;     the fear of the Lord is Zion’s treasure. 7 Listen! the valiant cry in the streets;     the envoys of peace weep bitterly. 8 The highways are deserted,     travellers have left the road. The treaty is broken,     its oaths are despised,     its obligation is disregarded. 9 The land mourns and languishes;     Lebanon is confounded and withers away;Sharon is like a desert;     and Bashan and Carmel shake off their leaves. 10 ‘Now I will arise,’ says the Lord ,     ‘now I will lift myself up;     now I will be exalted. 11 You conceive chaff, you bring forth stubble;     your breath is a fire that will consume you. 12 And the peoples will be as if burned to lime,     like thorns cut down, that are burned in the fire.’ 13 Hear, you who are far away, what I have done;     and you who are near, acknowledge my might. 14 The sinners in Zion are afraid;     trembling has seized the godless:‘Who among us can live with the devouring fire?     Who among us can live with everlasting flames?’ 15 Those who walk righteously and speak uprightly,     who despise the gain of oppression, who wave away a bribe instead of accepting it,     who stop their ears from hearing of bloodshed     and shut their eyes from looking on evil, 16 they will live on the heights;     their refuge will be the fortresses of rocks;     their food will be supplied, their water assured. 17 Your eyes will see the king in his beauty;     they will behold a land that stretches far away. 18 Your mind will muse on the terror:     ‘Where is the one who counted?     Where is the one who weighed the tribute?     Where is the one who counted the towers?’ 19 No longer will you see the insolent people,     the people of an obscure speech that you cannot comprehend,     stammering in a language that you cannot understand. 20 Look on Zion, the city of our appointed festivals!     Your eyes will see Jerusalem,     a quiet habitation, an immovable tent, whose stakes will never be pulled up,     and none of whose ropes will be broken. 21 But there the Lord in majesty will be for us     a place of broad rivers and streams, where no galley with oars can go,     nor stately ship can pass. 22 For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our ruler,     the Lord is our king; he will save us. 23 Your rigging hangs loose;     it cannot hold the mast firm in its place,     or keep the sail spread out. Then prey and spoil in abundance will be divided;     even the lame will fall to plundering. 24 And no inhabitant will say, ‘I am sick’;     the people who live there will be forgiven their iniquity.
2nd Reading
John 4.1-14
1 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard, ‘Jesus is making and baptizing more disciples than John’— 2 , although it was not Jesus himself but his disciples who baptized— 3 he left Judea and started back to Galilee. 4 But he had to go through Samaria. 5 So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. 7 A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, ‘Give me a drink’. 8 (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, ‘How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?’ (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.)10 Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, “Give me a drink”, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.’ 11 The woman said to him, ‘Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?’ 13 Jesus said to her, ‘Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.’

The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

7 The Canticle,
Christ Jesus was in the form of God:
But he did not cling to equality with God.
He emptied himself, taking the form of a servant:
And was born in our human likeness.
Being found in human form, he humbled himself:
And became obedient unto death,
Even death on a cross.
Therefore, God has highly exalted him:
And bestowed on him the name above every name,
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow:
In heaven and on earth and under the earth;
And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord:
to the glory of God the father.
Philippians 2.5b–11

Welcome to Thursday Morning prayer from the Anglican ‘A prayer book for Australia’.

1
This is the message we have heard from Christ:
That God is light, in whom there is no darkness at all.

Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.

2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of God’s Grace
Go up to a high mountain
Herald of good tidings to Zion:
Lift up your voice with strength,
Herald of good tidings to Jerusalem.
Lift up your voice, fear not:
Say to the cities of Judah, ‘Behold your God!’
See the Lord God coming with power:
Coming to rule with his mighty arm.
He brings his reward for the people of God:
the recompense for those who are saved.
God will feed his flock like a shepherd:
And gather the lambs in his arms;
He will hold them to his breast:
And gently lead those that are with young.
Isaiah 40.9-11

3 The Opening Prayer
The night has now passed and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence may be kept.
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever.
Amen.

4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 11; 12
11
1 In the Lord I have found my refuge:
how then can you say to me
‘Flee like a bird to the mountains;
2 ‘Look how the wicked make ready the bow,
and notch their arrows upon the string:
to shoot from the darkness at the true of heart;
3 ‘If the foundations are destroyed:
what can the righteous do?’
4 The Lord is in his holy place,
the Lord is enthroned in heaven:
his eyes search out, his glance tries the children of Adam.
5 He tries the righteous and the wicked:
and those that delight in violence his soul abhors.
6 He will rain down coals of fire and brimstone
upon the wicked:
a scorching wind shall be their cup to drink.
7 For the Lord is righteous and loves righteous acts:
the upright shall see his face.
12
1 Help, Lord, for there is not one godly person left:
the faithful have vanished from among
the children of Adam.
2 Everyone tells lies to their neighbour:
they flatter with their lips,
but speak from a double heart.
3 If only the Lord would cut off all flattering lips:
and the tongue that speaks so proudly!
4 They say ‘By our tongues we shall prevail:
our lips are our servants—who is lord over us?’
5 Because of the oppression of the poor,
because of the groaning of the needy:
‘I will arise’, says the Lord,
‘and set them in safety from those that
snarl after them.’
6 The words of the Lord are pure,
as silver refined in a crucible:
as gold that is seven times purified in the fire.
7 You will surely guard us, O Lord:
and shield us for ever from this evil generation,
8 Though the ungodly strut on every side:
though the vilest lord it over the children of Adam.

5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
Almighty God, who wonderfully created us in your own image and yet more wonderfully restored us in your son Jesus Christ: grant that as he came to share our human nature so we may be partakers in his divine glory; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever.
Amen.

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

1st Reading
Isaiah 66.1-9
1 Thus says the Lord :Heaven is my throne     and the earth is my footstool;what is the house that you would build for me,     and what is my resting-place? 2 All these things my hand has made,     and so all these things are mine, says the Lord .But this is the one to whom I will look,     to the humble and contrite in spirit,     who trembles at my word. 3 Whoever slaughters an ox is like one who kills a human being;     whoever sacrifices a lamb, like one who breaks a dog’s neck;whoever presents a grain-offering, like one who offers swine’s blood;     whoever makes a memorial offering of frankincense, like one who blesses an idol. These have chosen their own ways,     and in their abominations they take delight; 4 I also will choose to mock them,     and bring upon them what they fear;because, when I called, no one answered,     when I spoke, they did not listen;but they did what was evil in my sight,     and chose what did not please me. 5 Hear the word of the Lord ,     you who tremble at his word:Your own people who hate you     and reject you for my name’s sakehave said, ‘Let the Lord be glorified,     so that we may see your joy’;     but it is they who shall be put to shame. 6 Listen, an uproar from the city!     A voice from the temple! The voice of the Lord ,     dealing retribution to his enemies! 7 Before she was in labour     she gave birth;before her pain came upon her     she delivered a son. 8 Who has heard of such a thing?     Who has seen such things?Shall a land be born in one day?     Shall a nation be delivered in one moment?Yet as soon as Zion was in labour     she delivered her children. 9 Shall I open the womb and not deliver?     says the Lord ;shall I, the one who delivers, shut the womb?     says your God.
2nd Reading
Ephesians 3.1-13
1 This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles— 2 for surely you have already heard of the commission of God’s grace that was given to me for you, 3 and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, 4 a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. 5 In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: 6 that is, the Gentiles have become fellow-heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 7 Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God’s grace that was given to me by the working of his power. 8 Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, 9 and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; 10 so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. 13 I pray therefore that you may not lose heart over my sufferings for you; they are your glory.

The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

7 The Canticle,
In the beginning was the word:
and the word was with God,
 and the word was god:
he was in the beginning with god.
all things were made through him:
and without him, was not anything made that was made.
In him was life:
And the life was the light of all the people.
The light shines in the darkness:
And the darkness has not overcome it.
He was in the world:
And the world was made through him
yet the world knew him not.
he came to his own home:
and his own people received him not.
but to all who received him who believed on his name:
He has given power to become children of God;
who were born not of blood
nor of the will of the flesh:
nor of the will of a man but of God.
And the word became flesh
And dwelt among us full of grace and truth;
we have beheld his glory:
glory as of the only son from the father
and from his fullness have we all received:
And grace upon grace.

Welcome to Evening prayer from the Anglican ‘A prayer book for Australia’.
We proclaim the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ:
GOD in his infinite mercy, forgives all sins, and through our baptism in the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, we are given a rebirth into new life, free from the burden of all sin. ALLELUIA
God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy, you who truly and earnestly repent of your sins and intend to lead a new life, following God and walking in his Holy ways, draw near with faith, confident in God’s forgiveness to all who confess their sins. We confess our sins in penitence and faith;
Heavenly father I have sinned in thought word and deed please hear my confession:
I confess to greed of life, paving the way for my own profits and the profits of my neighbours instead of those of the Father.
Father, forgive me.
I confess to blasphemy of word, instead of honouring the Fathers holy name in all my speech.
Father, forgive me.
I confess to commanding my way in the world, by using the Fathers’ power to gain my wants and desires; instead of conforming to my purpose through the fathers will.
Father, forgive me.
Merciful Father: I turn to you in faith, pardon me and set me free from all my sins, through Jesus Christ. Amen
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessed be God forever.
Let us Pray.

1
The glory of the Lord shall be revealed;
and all people shall see it together.
Isaiah 40.5
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.

2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of Praise
God be gracious to us and bless us: and make your face to shine upon us, That your way may be known upon earth: your salvation among all nations. Let the peoples praise you, O God: let all the peoples praise you. Let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for you judge the peoples with equity and govern the nations upon earth. Let the peoples praise you, O God: let all the peoples praise you. Then the earth will bring forth its increase: and God, our own God, will bless us. You, O God, will bless us: and all the ends of the earth will fear you.
Psalm 67

3 The Opening Prayer
The day is now past, and the night is at hand.

Psalm 10
1 Why do you stand far off, O Lord:
why do you hide your face in time of need?
2 The ungodly in their pride persecute the poor:
let them be caught in the schemes they have devised.
3 For the ungodly boast of their heart’s desire:
they grasp at profit, they spurn and blaspheme the Lord.
4 They say in their arrogance ‘God will not avenge:’
‘There is no God’ is all their thought.
5 They are settled in all their ways:
your statutes, O Lord, are far above them,
and they do not see.
6 They snort defiance at their enemies,
they say in their heart ‘I shall never be shaken:
I shall walk secure from anyone’s curse.’
7 Their mouths are full of oppression and deceit:
mischief and wickedness lie under their tongue.
8 They skulk about in the villages:
and secretly murder the innocent.
9 Their eyes watch out for the helpless:
they lurk concealed like a lion in a thicket.
10 They lie in wait to seize upon the poor:
they lay hold on the poor
and drag them off in their nets.
11 The upright are crushed and humbled before them:
and the helpless fall into their power.
12 They say in their heart ‘God has forgotten:
he has covered his face and sees nothing.’
13 Arise, O Lord God, lift up your hand:
forget not the poor for ever.
14 Why should the wicked spurn God:
why should they say in their heart ‘He will not avenge’?
15 Surely you see the trouble and the sorrow:
you look on, and will take it into your own hands.
16 The helpless commit themselves to you:
for you are the helper of the fatherless.
17 Break the power of the ungodly:
search out their wickedness till it is found no more.
18 The Lord is king for ever and ever:
the heathen have perished from his land.
19 You have heard the longing of the meek, O Lord:
you turned your ear to their hearts’ desire,
20 To help the poor and fatherless to their right:
that they may no more be terrified from their land.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
God of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: graft in our hearts the love of your name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of your great mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

1st Reading
Isaiah 32.9-33.4
9 Rise up, you women who are at ease, hear my voice;     you complacent daughters, listen to my speech. 10 In little more than a year     you will shudder, you complacent ones;for the vintage will fail,     the fruit harvest will not come. 11 Tremble, you women who are at ease,     shudder, you complacent ones;strip, and make yourselves bare,     and put sackcloth on your loins. 12 Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields,     for the fruitful vine, 13 for the soil of my people     growing up in thorns and briers;yes, for all the joyous houses     in the jubilant city. 14 For the palace will be forsaken,     the populous city deserted;the hill and the watch-tower     will become dens for ever, the joy of wild asses,     a pasture for flocks; 15 until a spirit from on high is poured out on us,     and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field,     and the fruitful field is deemed a forest. 16 Then justice will dwell in the wilderness,     and righteousness abide in the fruitful field. 17 The effect of righteousness will be peace,     and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust for ever. 18 My people will abide in a peaceful habitation,     in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting-places. 19 The forest will disappear completely,     and the city will be utterly laid low. 20 Happy will you be who sow beside every stream,     who let the ox and the donkey range freely. 1 Ah, you destroyer,     who yourself have not been destroyed;you treacherous one,     with whom no one has dealt treacherously! When you have ceased to destroy,     you will be destroyed;and when you have stopped dealing treacherously,     you will be dealt with treacherously. 2 O Lord , be gracious to us; we wait for you.     Be our arm every morning,     our salvation in the time of trouble. 3 At the sound of tumult, peoples fled;     before your majesty, nations scattered. 4 Spoil was gathered as the caterpillar gathers;     as locusts leap, they leapt upon it.
2nd Reading
John 3.22-36
22 After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he spent some time there with them and baptized.23 John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim because water was abundant there; and people kept coming and were being baptized— 24 <<John, of course, had not yet been thrown into prison. 25 Now a discussion about purification arose between John’s disciples and a Jew. 26 They came to John and said to him, ‘Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you testified, here he is baptizing, and all are going to him.’ 27 John answered, ‘No one can receive anything except what has been given from heaven. 28 You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, “I am not the Messiah, but I have been sent ahead of him.”29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. For this reason my joy has been fulfilled. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.’ 31 The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly things. The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard, yet no one accepts his testimony. 33 Whoever has accepted his testimony has certified this, that God is true. 34 He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. 35 The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in his hands. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure God’s wrath.

The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

7 The Canticle, The Song of Mary (Magnificat)
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord: my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, Who has looked with favour on his lowly servant: from this day all generations will call me blessed; The Almighty has done great things for me: and holy is his name. God has mercy on those who fear him: from generation to generation. The Lord has shown strength with his arm: and scattered the proud in their conceit, Casting down the mighty from their thrones: and lifting up the lowly. God has filled the hungry with good things: and sent the rich away empty. He has come to the aid of his servant Israel: to remember the promise of mercy, The promise made to our forebears: to Abraham and his children for ever.
Luke 1.47–55

Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessed be God forever.

1
Rejoice always pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks;
For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus.

Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.

2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of God’s Grace
Blessed are you,
the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ:
For you have blessed us in Christ Jesus
with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
You chose us to be yours in Christ,
before the foundation of the world:
That we should be holy and blameless before you.
In love you destined us to be your children,
through Jesus Christ:
according to the purpose of your will,
to the praise of your glorious grace:
which you freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.
Ephesians 1.3-6

3 The Opening Prayer
The night has now passed and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence may be kept.
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever.
Amen.

4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 9
1 I will give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart:
I will tell of all the wonders you have done.
2 I will rejoice and be glad in you:
I will make my songs to your name, O Most High.
3 For my enemies are driven back:
they stumble and perish at your presence.
4 You have maintained my cause and my right:
you sat enthroned as a righteous judge.
5 You rebuked the heathen nations,
you brought the wicked to destruction:
you blotted out their name for ever and ever.
6 The strongholds of the enemy are made a perpetual desolation:
you plucked up their cities, and even their memory has perished.
7 The Lord confounds them; but the Lord endures
for ever:
he has set up his throne for judgement.
8 He shall judge the world with righteousness:
and deal true justice to the peoples.
9 The Lord is a strong tower to those that are oppressed:
he is a tower of strength in time of need.
10 All who heed your name will trust in you:
for you have never forsaken those that seek you.
11 O sing praises to the Lord who dwells in Zion:
tell among the peoples what great things he has done.
12 For he that avenges blood has remembered the poor:
he has not forgotten their cry.
13 The Lord has been merciful toward me,
he saw what I suffered from my foes:
he raised me up again from the gates of death,
14 That I might tell all your praises in the gates of Zion:
that I might rejoice in your deliverance.
15 The nations have sunk into the pit they dug for others:
in the very snare they laid is their foot taken;
16 The Lord has declared himself and upheld the right:
the wicked are trapped in the work of their own hands.
17 The wicked shall be given over to death:
and all the nations that forget God.
18 For the needy shall not always be forgotten:
nor shall the hope of the poor perish for ever.
19 Arise, Lord, let no human power prevail:
let the nations be judged before you.
20 Put them in fear, O Lord:
and let the nations know they are but human.

5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
We consecrate this day to your service, O Lord; may all our thoughts, words, and actions be well-pleasing to you and serve the good of our brothers and sisters; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

The 1st Reading is from
Isaiah 65.1-16
1 I was ready to be sought out by those who did not ask,     to be found by those who did not seek me.I said, ‘Here I am, here I am’,     to a nation that did not call on my name. 2 I held out my hands all day long     to a rebellious people, who walk in a way that is not good,     following their own devices; 3 a people who provoke me     to my face continually, sacrificing in gardens     and offering incense on bricks; 4 who sit inside tombs,     and spend the night in secret places;who eat swine’s flesh,     with broth of abominable things in their vessels; 5 who say, ‘Keep to yourself,     do not come near me, for I am too holy for you.’These are a smoke in my nostrils,     a fire that burns all day long. 6 See, it is written before me:     I will not keep silent, but I will repay;I will indeed repay into their laps 7 their iniquities and their ancestors’ iniquities together, says the Lord ;because they offered incense on the mountains     and reviled me on the hills,I will measure into their laps     full payment for their actions. 8 Thus says the Lord :As the wine is found in the cluster,     and they say, ‘Do not destroy it,     for there is a blessing in it’,so I will do for my servants’ sake,     and not destroy them all. 9 I will bring forth descendants from Jacob,     and from Judah inheritors of my mountains;my chosen shall inherit it,     and my servants shall settle there. 10 Sharon shall become a pasture for flocks,     and the Valley of Achor a place for herds to lie down,     for my people who have sought me. 11 But you who forsake the Lord ,     who forget my holy mountain, who set a table for Fortune     and fill cups of mixed wine for Destiny, 12 I will destine you to the sword,     and all of you shall bow down to the slaughter;because, when I called, you did not answer,     when I spoke, you did not listen, but you did what was evil in my sight,     and chose what I did not delight in. 13 Therefore thus says the Lord God :My servants shall eat,     but you shall be hungry;my servants shall drink,     but you shall be thirsty;my servants shall rejoice,     but you shall be put to shame; 14 my servants shall sing for gladness of heart,     but you shall cry out for pain of heart,     and shall wail for anguish of spirit. 15 You shall leave your name to my chosen to use as a curse,     and the Lord God will put you to death;     but to his servants he will give a different name. 16 Then whoever invokes a blessing in the land     shall bless by the God of faithfulness, and whoever takes an oath in the land     shall swear by the God of faithfulness;because the former troubles are forgotten     and are hidden from my sight.
2nd Reading
Ephesians 2.11-22
11 So then, remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called ‘the uncircumcision’ by those who are called ‘the circumcision’—a physical circumcision made in the flesh by human hands— 12 remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. 15 He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, so that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, 16 and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. 17 So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; 18 for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. 21 In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; 22 in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling-place for God.

The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

7 The Canticle,
We praise you O God:
we claim you as Lord.
All creation worships you:
The Father everlasting.
To you all angels, all the powers of heaven:
The cherubim and serafim sing in endless praise:
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of power and might:
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
The glorious company of apostles praise you:
The noble fellowship of prophets praise you.
The white robed army of martyrs praise you:
Throughout the world the holy church acclaims you;
Father of majesty unbounded:
Your true and only son, worthy of all praise,
the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.
You, Christ, are the king of glory,
the eternal son of the father.
When you took our flesh to set us free:
You humbly chose the virgin's womb.
You overcame the sting of death:
And opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
You are seated at God's right hand in glory:
We believe that you will come to be our judge.
Come then, Lord, and help your people,
bought with the price of your own blood:
And bring us with your Saints to glory everlasting.

Amen.

4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 7; 8
7
1 O Lord my God, to you have I come for shelter:
save me from all who pursue me, O save and deliver me,
2 Lest like lions they tear my throat:
lest they carry me off and none can save me.
3 O Lord my God, if I have done such a thing:
if there is any wickedness on my hands,
4 If I have repaid with evil one that was my friend:
or plundered my enemy without just cause,
5 Then let the enemy pursue me and overtake me:
let them trample my life to the ground,
and lay my honour in the dust.
6 Arise, O Lord, in your anger:
rise up in wrath against my adversaries.
7 Awake, my God, you that ordain justice:
and let the assembly of the peoples gather about you;
8 Take your seat high above them:
and sit in judgement, O Lord, over the nations.
9 Judge for me, O Lord, according to my righteousness:
and as my integrity requires.
10 Let the wickedness of the ungodly cease,
but establish the righteous:
for you try our very hearts and minds, O righteous God.
11 God is my shield over me:
he preserves the true of heart.
12 God vindicates the righteous:
but God condemns evil every day.
13 If an evildoer will not turn, he whets his sword:
he strings the bow and makes it ready;
14 He prepares the instruments of death:
and makes his arrows darts of fire.
15 See how the ungodly conceive mischief:
how they swell with wickedness and give birth to lies.
16 They dig a pit and hollow it out:
but fall themselves into the trap they had made for others.
17 Their mischief rebounds upon their own head:
and their violence comes down on their own pate.
18 I will thank the Lord for his justice:
I will sing praises to the Lord Most High.
8
1 O Lord our Governor:
how glorious is your name in all the earth!
2 Your majesty above the heavens is yet recounted:
by the mouths of babes and sucklings.
3 You have founded a strong defence
against your adversaries:
to quell the enemy and the avenger.
4 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers:
the moon and the stars which you have set in order,
5 What are we, that you should be mindful of us:
what are we, that you should care for us?
6 Yet you have made us little less than gods:
and have crowned us with glory and honour.
7 You have given us dominion over your handiwork:
and have put all things in subjection beneath our feet,
8 All sheep and oxen:
and all the creatures of the field,
9 The birds of the air and the fish of the sea:
and everything that moves
in the pathways of the great waters.
10 O Lord our Governor:
how glorious is your name in all the earth!

5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
God of grace, we thank you for all your gifts to us:
grant us to accept both pain and joy in faith and hope,
and never to fail in love to you
 and to our sisters and brothers;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
Amen.
6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

1st Reading
Isaiah 30.15-28
15 For thus said the Lord God , the Holy One of Israel:In returning and rest you shall be saved;     in quietness and in trust shall be your strength. But you refused 16 and said,‘No! We will flee upon horses’—     therefore you shall flee!and, ‘We will ride upon swift steeds’—     therefore your pursuers shall be swift! 17 A thousand shall flee at the threat of one,     at the threat of five you shall flee, until you are left     like a flagstaff on the top of a mountain,     like a signal on a hill. 18 Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you;     therefore he will rise up to show mercy to you.For the Lord is a God of justice;     blessed are all those who wait for him. 19 Truly, O people in Zion, inhabitants of Jerusalem, you shall weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when he hears it, he will answer you. 20 Though the Lord may give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself any more, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. 21 And when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left, your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’ 22 Then you will defile your silver-covered idols and your gold-plated images. You will scatter them like filthy rags; you will say to them, ‘Away with you!’ 23 He will give rain for the seed with which you sow the ground, and grain, the produce of the ground, which will be rich and plenteous. On that day your cattle will graze in broad pastures; 24 and the oxen and donkeys that till the ground will eat silage, which has been winnowed with shovel and fork. 25 On every lofty mountain and every high hill there will be brooks running with water—on a day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall. 26 Moreover, the light of the moon will be like the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, like the light of seven days, on the day when the Lord binds up the injuries of his people, and heals the wounds inflicted by his blow. 27 See, the name of the Lord comes from far away,     burning with his anger, and in thick rising smoke;his lips are full of indignation,     and his tongue is like a devouring fire; 28 his breath is like an overflowing stream     that reaches up to the neck—to sift the nations with the sieve of destruction,     and to place on the jaws of the peoples a bridle that leads them astray.
2nd Reading
John 3.1-21
1 Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. 2 He came to Jesus by night and said to him, ‘Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.’3 Jesus answered him, ‘Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.’ 4 Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?’5 Jesus answered, ‘Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. 6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be astonished that I said to you, “You must be born from above.” 8 The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.’ 9 Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can these things be?’ 10 Jesus answered him, ‘Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? 11 ‘Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 ‘Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgement, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. 20 For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. 21 But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.’
The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or

Welcome to Tuesday morning prayer from the Anglican ‘A prayer book for Australia’.

1
We will proclaim the name of the Lord
Ascribe greatness to our God

Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.

2 The Opening Canticle,
God who is rich in mercy
out of the great love with which he loved us,
even when we were dead through our trespasses
made us alive together with Christ,
and raised us up with him:
and made us sit with him
in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus
that he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace:
in kindness towards us in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 2.4-7

3 The Opening Prayer
The night has passed and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence may be kept.
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever.
Amen.

4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
Psalm 5; 6
5
1 Hear my words, O Lord, give heed to my groaning:
listen to my cry, you that are my king and my God.
2 In the morning when I pray to you,
surely you will hear my voice:
at daybreak I lay my prayers before you, and look up.
3 For you are not a God who
takes pleasure in wickedness:
nor can any evil dwell with you.
4 The boastful cannot stand in your sight:
you hate all those that work mischief.
5 Those who speak lies you destroy:
you abhor the treacherous, O Lord,
and those that are stained with blood.
6 But because of your great goodness
I will come into your house:
I will bow down toward your holy temple
in awe and fear of you.
7 Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness,
for my enemies lie in wait:
make straight your way before me.
8 For there is no truth in their mouth:
and within they are eaten up by malice.
9 Their throat is an open sepulchre:
and their tongue speaks smooth and flattering words.
10 Destroy them, O God,
let them fall by their own contriving:
cast them out for their many offences,
for they have rebelled against you.
11 But let all who put their trust in you rejoice:
let them shout with joy for ever.
12 Be the defender of those who love your name:
let them exult because of you.
13 For you will bless, O Lord, those that are righteous:
you will cover them with your favour as with a shield.
6
1 O Lord, rebuke me not in your indignation:
nor chasten me in your fierce displeasure.
2 Have mercy upon me, O Lord, for I am weak:
O Lord, heal me, for my very bones are afraid.
3 My soul also is greatly troubled:
and you, Lord—how long will you delay?
4 Turn again, O Lord, and deliver my soul:
O save me for your mercy’s sake.
5 For in death no one remembers you:
and who can give you thanks from the grave?
6 I am wearied with my groaning:
every night I drown my bed with weeping,
and water my couch with my tears.
7 My eyes waste away for sorrow:
they grow dim because of all my enemies.
8 Away from me, all you that do evil:
for the Lord has heard the voice of my weeping.
9 The Lord has heard my supplication:
the Lord will receive my prayer.
10 All my enemies shall be put to shame and
greatly dismayed:
they shall turn back and be confounded in a moment.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
Lord, our God, our Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier: we ask you to cleanse us from all hypocrisy, to unite us to our fellow men and women by the bonds of peace and love, and to confirm us in holiness; now and for ever.
Amen.

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

1st Reading
Isaiah 64
1 O that you would tear open the heavens and come down,     so that the mountains would quake at your presence— 2 as when fire kindles brushwood     and the fire causes water to boil—to make your name known to your adversaries,     so that the nations might tremble at your presence! 3 When you did awesome deeds that we did not expect,     you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence. 4 From ages past no one has heard,     no ear has perceived,no eye has seen any God besides you,     who works for those who wait for him. 5 You meet those who gladly do right,     those who remember you in your ways. But you were angry, and we sinned;     because you hid yourself we transgressed. 6 We have all become like one who is unclean,     and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy cloth. We all fade like a leaf,     and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. 7 There is no one who calls on your name,     or attempts to take hold of you;for you have hidden your face from us,     and have delivered us into the hand of our iniquity. 8 Yet, O Lord , you are our Father;     we are the clay, and you are our potter;     we are all the work of your hand. 9 Do not be exceedingly angry, O Lord ,     and do not remember iniquity for ever.     Now consider, we are all your people. 10 Your holy cities have become a wilderness,     Zion has become a wilderness,     Jerusalem a desolation. 11 Our holy and beautiful house,     where our ancestors praised you,has been burned by fire,     and all our pleasant places have become ruins. 12 After all this, will you restrain yourself, O Lord ?     Will you keep silent, and punish us so severely?
2nd Reading
Ephesians 2.1-10
1 You were dead through the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. 3 All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness towards us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— 9 not the result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.
The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

7 The Canticle, A Song of the Blessed
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for what is right: for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful: for mercy shall be shown to them. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5.3–10

Amen.
