1
This is the message we have heard from Christ:
That God is light, in whom there is no darkness at all.

Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.

2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of God’s Grace
Go up to a high mountain
Herald of good tidings to Zion:
Lift up your voice with strength,
Herald of good tidings to Jerusalem.
Lift up your voice, fear not:
Say to the cities of Judah, ‘Behold your God!’
See the Lord God coming with power:
Coming to rule with his mighty arm.
He brings his reward for the people of God:
the recompense for those who are saved.
God will feed his flock like a shepherd:
And gather the lambs in his arms;
He will hold them to his breast:
And gently lead those that are with young.
Isaiah 40.9-11

and bear much fruit to your glory.

7 The Canticle,
In the beginning was the word:
 and the word was with God,
 and the word was god:
 he was in the beginning with god.
 all things were made through him:
 and without him, was not anything made that was made.
In him was life:
And the life was the light of all the people.
The light shines in the darkness:
And the darkness has not overcome it.
He was in the world:
And the world was made through him
 yet the world knew him not.
 he came to his own home:
and his own people received him not.
but to all who received him who believed on his name:
He has given power to become children of God;
who were born not of blood
nor of the will of the flesh:
nor of the will of a man but of God.
And the word became flesh
And dwelt among us full of grace and truth;
we have beheld his glory:
 glory as of the only son from the father
and from his fullness have we all received:
And grace upon grace.

8 The Apostles’ Creed may be said.

The white robed army of martyrs praise you:
Throughout the world the holy church acclaims you;

You, Christ, are the king of glory,

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

1st Reading
Jeremiah 25.27-38
27 Then you shall say to them, Thus says the Lordof hosts, the God of Israel: Drink, get drunk and vomit, fall and rise no more, because of the sword that I am sending among you. 28 And if they refuse to accept the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord of hosts: You must drink! 29 See, I am beginning to bring disaster on the city that is called by my name, and how can you possibly avoid punishment? You shall not go unpunished, for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth, says the Lord of hosts. 30 You, therefore, shall prophesy against them all these words, and say to them:The Lord will roar from on high,     and from his holy habitation utter his voice;he will roar mightily against his fold,     and shout, like those who tread grapes,     against all the inhabitants of the earth. 31 The clamour will resound to the ends of the earth,     for the Lord has an indictment against the nations;he is entering into judgement with all flesh,     and the guilty he will put to the sword,says the Lord . 32 Thus says the Lord of hosts:See, disaster is spreading     from nation to nation,and a great tempest is stirring     from the farthest parts of the earth! 33 Those slain by the Lord on that day shall extend from one end of the earth to the other. They shall not be lamented, or gathered, or buried; they shall become dung on the surface of the ground. 34 Wail, you shepherds, and cry out;     roll in ashes, you lords of the flock,for the days of your slaughter have come—and your dispersions,     and you shall fall like a choice vessel. 35 Flight shall fail the shepherds,     and there shall be no escape for the lords of the flock. 36 Hark! the cry of the shepherds,     and the wail of the lords of the flock!For the Lord is despoiling their pasture, 37 and the peaceful folds are devastated,     because of the fierce anger of the Lord . 38 Like a lion he has left his covert;     for their land has become a wastebecause of the cruel sword,     and because of his fierce anger.
2nd Reading
Hebrews 3.16-4.10
16 Now who were they who heard and yet were rebellious? Was it not all those who left Egypt under the leadership of Moses? 17 But with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, if not to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief. 1 Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest is still open, let us take care that none of you should seem to have failed to reach it. 2 For indeed the good news came to us just as to them; but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened. 3 For we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,‘As in my anger I swore,“They shall not enter my rest” ’,though his works were finished at the foundation of the world. 4 For in one place it speaks about the seventh day as follows: ‘And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.’ 5 And again in this place it says, ‘They shall not enter my rest.’ 6 Since therefore it remains open for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, 7 again he sets a certain day—‘today’—saying through David much later, in the words already quoted,‘Today, if you hear his voice,do not harden your hearts.’ 8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not speak later about another day. 9 So then, a sabbath rest still remains for the people of God; 10 for those who enter God’s rest also cease from their labours as God did from his.

The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

7 The Canticle, A Song of the Blessed
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for what is right: for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful: for mercy shall be shown to them. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5.3–10

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

perfect remission and forgiveness;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The day is now past and the night is at hand.
Let us pray with one heart and mind.

6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed.

1st Reading
Jeremiah 2.1-13
1 The word of the Lord came to me, saying: 2 Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says the Lord :I remember the devotion of your youth,     your love as a bride,how you followed me in the wilderness,     in a land not sown. 3 Israel was holy to the Lord ,     the first fruits of his harvest.All who ate of it were held guilty;     disaster came upon them,says the Lord . 4 Hear the word of the Lord , O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel. 5 Thus says the Lord :What wrong did your ancestors find in me     that they went far from me,and went after worthless things, and became worthless themselves? 6 They did not say, ‘Where is the Lord     who brought us up from the land of Egypt,who led us in the wilderness,     in a land of deserts and pits,in a land of drought and deep darkness,     in a land that no one passes through,     where no one lives?’ 7 I brought you into a plentiful land     to eat its fruits and its good things.But when you entered you defiled my land,     and made my heritage an abomination. 8 The priests did not say, ‘Where is the Lord ?’     Those who handle the law did not know me;the rulers transgressed against me;     the prophets prophesied by Baal,     and went after things that do not profit. 9 Therefore once more I accuse you,says the Lord ,     and I accuse your children’s children. 10 Cross to the coasts of Cyprus and look,     send to Kedar and examine with care;     see if there has ever been such a thing. 11 Has a nation changed its gods,     even though they are no gods?But my people have changed their glory     for something that does not profit. 12 Be appalled, O heavens, at this,     be shocked, be utterly desolate,says the Lord , 13 for my people have committed two evils:     they have forsaken me,the fountain of living water,     and dug out cisterns for themselves,cracked cisterns     that can hold no water.
2nd Reading
Mark 14.1-25
1 It was two days before the Passover and the festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him; 2 for they said, ‘Not during the festival, or there may be a riot among the people.’ 3 While he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment of nard, and she broke open the jar and poured the ointment on his head. 4 But some were there who said to one another in anger, ‘Why was the ointment wasted in this way? 5 For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor.’ And they scolded her. 6 But Jesus said, ‘Let her alone; why do you trouble her? She has performed a good service for me. 7 For you always have the poor with you, and you can show kindness to them whenever you wish; but you will not always have me. 8 She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial. 9 Truly I tell you, wherever the good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her.’ 10 Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. 11 When they heard it, they were greatly pleased, and promised to give him money. So he began to look for an opportunity to betray him. 12 On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, his disciples said to him, ‘Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?’ 13 So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, ‘Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him, 14 and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, “The Teacher asks, Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?” 15 He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.’ 16 So the disciples set out and went to the city, and found everything as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal.17 When it was evening, he came with the twelve.18 And when they had taken their places and were eating, Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.’ 19 They began to be distressed and to say to him one after another, ‘Surely, not I?’ 20 He said to them, ‘It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the bowl with me. 21 For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born.’22 While they were eating, he took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to them, and said, ‘Take; this is my body.’ 23 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them drank from it. 24 He said to them, ‘This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly I tell you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.’

The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

7 The Canticle, The Song of Mary (Magnificat)
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord: my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, Who has looked with favour on his lowly servant: from this day all generations will call me blessed; The Almighty has done great things for me: and holy is his name. God has mercy on those who fear him: from generation to generation. The Lord has shown strength with his arm: and scattered the proud in their conceit, Casting down the mighty from their thrones: and lifting up the lowly. God has filled the hungry with good things: and sent the rich away empty. He has come to the aid of his servant Israel: to remember the promise of mercy, The promise made to our forebears: to Abraham and his children for ever.
Luke 1.47–55

Christ is the image of the invisible God: the first-born of all creation. For in him all things were created: in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible. All things were created through him and for him: he is before all things and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the Church: he is the beginning, the first-born from the dead. For it pleased God that in him all fullness should dwell: and through him all things be reconciled to himself.
Colossians 1.15–20
