Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessed be God forever;

Let us Pray.

Grace, mercy and peace,

from God the Father, and Jesus Christ our Lord. 

1 Timothy 1.2

 

Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit: 

as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen. 

  

 

2 The Opening Canticle, The Praise of God’s Servants

Come now, praise the Lord, all you servants of the Lord: 
you that stand by night in the house of the Lord. 
Lift up your hands in the holy place and praise the Lord: 
May the Lord bless you from Zion, 
the Lord who made heaven and earth. 

Psalm 134

  

 

3 The Opening Prayer

The day is now past and the night is at hand. 

Let us pray with one heart and mind. 

  

 

Silence may be kept.

Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our evening sacrifice; make us a light for all the world, delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. 

Amen.

  

  

4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.

Psalm 93

¹ The Lord is king, and has put on robes of glory:

the Lord has put on his glory,

he has girded himself with strength.

² He has made the world so firm:

that it cannot be moved.

³ Your throne is established from of old:

you are from everlasting.

⁴ The floods have lifted up, O Lord,

the floods have lifted up their voice:

the floods lift up their pounding.

⁵ But mightier than the sound of many waters,

than the mighty waters or the breakers of the sea:

the Lord on high is mighty.

⁶ Your decrees are very sure:

and holiness, O Lord, adorns your house for ever.

5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow

Lord of life, by the power of your resurrection, deliver us from all selfishness and bring us to the fullness of your joy; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever.

1st Reading

1 Samuel 16.2–13

² Samuel said, ‘How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me.’ And the Lord said, ‘Take a heifer with you, and say, “I have come to sacrifice to the Lord .” ³ Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you.’ ⁴ Samuel did what the Lord commanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, ‘Do you come peaceably?’ ⁵ He said, ‘Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord ; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.’ And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. ⁶ When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, ‘Surely the Lord ’s anointed is now before the Lord .’ ⁷ But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.’ ⁸ Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, ‘Neither has the Lord chosen this one.’ ⁹ Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, ‘Neither has the Lord chosen this one.’ ¹⁰ Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, ‘The Lord has not chosen any of these.’¹¹ Samuel said to Jesse, ‘Are all your sons here?’ And he said, ‘There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.’ And Samuel said to Jesse, ‘Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.’ ¹² He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. The Lord said, ‘Rise and anoint him; for this is the one.’ ¹³ Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah.

2nd Reading

Matthew 21.1–11

¹ When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 
² saying to them, ‘Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. 
³ If anyone says anything to you, just say this, “The Lord needs them.” And he will send them immediately.’ 
⁴ This took place to fulfil what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, 
⁵ ‘Tell the daughter of Zion,
Look, your king is coming to you,
     humble, and mounted on a donkey,
     and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ 
⁶ The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; 
⁷ they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. 
⁸ A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 
⁹ The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting,
‘Hosanna to the Son of David!
     Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!’ 
¹⁰ When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, ‘Who is this?’ 
¹¹ The crowds were saying, ‘This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.’

and bear much fruit to your glory.

 

7 The Canticle, The Song of Mary (Magnificat)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord: 
my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, 
Who has looked with favour on his lowly servant: 
from this day all generations will call me blessed; 
The Almighty has done great things for me: 
and holy is his name. 
God has mercy on those who fear him: 
from generation to generation. 
The Lord has shown strength with his arm: 
and scattered the proud in their conceit, 
Casting down the mighty from their thrones: 
and lifting up the lowly. 
God has filled the hungry with good things: 
and sent the rich away empty. 
He has come to the aid of his servant Israel: 
to remember the promise of mercy, 
The promise made to our forebears: 
to Abraham and his children for ever.

10 The Lord’s Prayer and the Collect of the Day

Our Father in heaven, 
hallowed be your name, 
your kingdom come, 
your will be done, 
on earth as in heaven. 
Give us today our daily bread. 
Forgive us our sins 
as we forgive those who sin against us. 
Save us from the time of trial 
and deliver us from evil. 
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours 
now and for ever. Amen. 

 

Christ the King / The Reign of Christ

God of power and love,

who raised your Son Jesus from death to life,

resplendent in glory to rule over all creation:

free the world to rejoice in his peace,

to glory in his justice, and to live in his love.

Unite the human race in Jesus Christ your Son,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

 

Prayer of the Week

Stir up, we pray you, O Lord,

the wills of your faithful people,

that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works,

may by you be plenteously rewarded;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

 

11 Intercessions and Thanksgivings may be made according to local custom and need.

 

Almighty God, hear our prayer to bring about a change throughout the people, we ask you to relay the wisdom to each man and woman how to co-exist in peace, to continue to respect one another and teach their offspring to do the same.

We ask this in Jesus Christs name. Amen

Be present, merciful God, 

and protect us through the hours of this night: that we, 

who are wearied by the changes and chances of this fleeting world, 

may rest on your eternal changelessness; 

through Jesus Christ our Lord. 

Amen.

And also with you. 

Let us praise the Lord. 

Thanks be to God.

  

 

May the God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, equip us with everything good that we may do his will, to whom be glory for ever. 

Amen.
